1 Comparison of Agility Platform to VMware

2 ServiceMesh Agility Platform
A single, consolidated platform to enable on-demand, self-service IT operating models for Global 2000 enterprises Who is ServiceMesh? We’ve been in the EMC Select program only recently, but as a company have been around since 2008 We sell a Cloud Management Platform called the Agility Platform… and we sell it to very large Global Enterprises like UBS, Pfizer, Visa, and others The Agility Platform is a Cloud Management Platform… and its used to deploy and manage enterprise-grade platforms and applications portfolios into hybrid clouds. Our customers use the Agility Platform to govern and deliver of entire IT service portfolios that are cloud-based (combos of infra, platforms, apps)…. and its done in an on-demand and self-service manner directly to the end users that need them. (not IT ops, but Business Unit dev teams) These customers are doing this to implement a new IT operating model… and provide them with significant agility and cost saving benefits relative to the way their IT organization operated in the past. And our Agility Platform is a key enabler in doing this. One of the keys to really extending those self-service capabilities to end users…. And one of the things thats unique about the Agility Platform, is that we’ve taken a very application-centric approach to cloud governance….. What I mean by that…is that we provide an extensible policy framework that’s very powerful, and allows you to create an unlimited number of custom policies based on operational parameters, security parameters, compliance parameters, lifecycle events, and other things that you specify. And by using these high level policies…. You can automate and govern IT resource consumption across large enterprises from a single control point ….. and simplify operational complexity by managing all of this across different hybrid clouds. If you look at the graphic here……The Agility Platform itself is one, integrated product. And it consists of five product modules, and they’re all organized along the lifecycle of a cloud workload: Planner is used for scoring and evaluating different workloads to determine their suitability to migrate to the cloud. Designer is a graphical workbench to assemble cloud portable stacks, templates, and complex application topologies for deployment across diverse hybrid clouds. Store is our self-service portal for provisioning IT resource portfolios. Release Manager is an easy to use visual dashboard to promote software builds and deployment environments across SDLC stages. Operations is a consolidated runtime management console where you aggregate performance monitoring and IT resource consumption information across instances and clouds under management. All of this sits on top of a core platform…for governance, security, and lifecycle management. Agility ties these modules together into continuous lifecycle…. So you can have seamless promotion of workloads from one module to the next. Agility also give you the ability to deploy workloads portably across different clouds. We support currently 16 different private and public clouds. And we’ve also got a very comprehensive API and adaptors to tie directly into an organization’s existing SDLC toolchain and existing IT operations tools.

4 Agility Platform – capabilities that span cloud infrastructure to applications
Identity & Access Management Enterprise CMP Requirements To Enable Cloud-Based IT Operating Models Cloud Applications Orchestration & Automation Service Lifecycle Service Design Service Operations Agility Platform provides a broad range of capabilities as illustrated in this slide. We already discussed several of them, and if we performed an Agility Platform demo we could cover even more. . You’ll note that these functional capabilities are displayed vertically…. That’s to visually denote that they span the requirements of cloud infrastructure AND cloud platforms and applications. You’ll also note the broad range of public and private clouds we support at the bottom. You’ll also note a line at the top. This represents the notional “bar” that must be met to enable new cloud-based IT operating models in large enterprise accounts. Its critical that you have a CMP that is application-centric in its management, orchestrations, and governance capabilities to reach this bar. Anything less, and you won’t “move the needle” strategically to obtain the same results as customers like CBA or Visa, for example. 5 Agility Platform comparison to VMware
Enterprise CMP Requirements Identity & Access Management VMware gap: Multiple overlapping tools that are not integrated Lack of centralized governance No application release automation across SDLC stages Limited to infrastructure-centric runbook automation Severely limited beyond vSphere-based clouds Cloud Applications Orchestration & Automation In this slide, we now compare Agility Platform to VMware offerings. You’ll see that VMware doesn’t make the “bar”. In fact, it falls well short. The reason for the “gap” is shown in the bullet points below: VMware gap: No application context Multiple overlapping tools that are not integrated Lack of centralized governance No application release automation or DevOps Limited to infrastructure-centric runbook automation Severely limited beyond vSphere-based clouds You’ll also note that public and private cloud support is notably less…. And that there is a tremendous amount of disparate, overlapping products to assemble the complete VMware solution. This poses some serious issues regarding disaster recovery and other failure scenarios that can be problematic to enterprise accounts vFabric App Director – more of a visual modeling tool than an run-time model of how a real application would deploy in different clouds. For example, there is no auto-scaling control via App Director vCloud Automation Center – a recent acquisition with no integration to other products However, let’s look at this suite as a whole next…. 9 Agility Platform is a single integrated platform to address enterprise CMP needs
VMware IT Business Mgmt Products vFabric APM Single, fully integrated platform Extensible policies for app- centric governance Support for 16 different clouds, both internal and external Application release automation and SDLC acceleration And much more…. Automated config mgmt detection & remediation Cloud migration planning modules End-to-end security model Cloud provider benchmarking more… vFabric Application Director “Business-level’ App monitoring and analysis Instead, the Agility Platform provide a single integrated platform to address all their needs: Agility Platform is the only enterprise grade cloud management platform that: Automates the deployment and management of enterprise applications across private, public and hybrid cloud environments Enforces governance, compliance and security across the full lifecycle of cloud applications Provides application release automation across the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Empowers the business with on-demand, self-service access to enterprise cloud applications, platforms, and services Agility Platform enhances the value of the VMWare ecosystem and drives consumption of VMWare products….(next slide) NOTE: Agility Platform integrates with vCloud Director and vCenter… hence the dotted line around vCloud Director in the slide. vCloud Director is not necessary for many customer use cases, but Agility Platform supports it. 10 Agility Platform can drive additional licenses for complementary VMware products
VMware IT Business Mgmt Products vFabric APM + Additional Licenses + Additional Licenses vFabric Application Director + Additional Licenses Agility Platform is not about displacing vCAC and vAppDirector. Its about growing the customer’s footprint in the cloud. By using Agility Platform to successfully grow the customer’s cloud footprint with higher level platforms and apps…. We actually complement and drive the consumption of MORE VMware products. Specifically, when you successfully implement Agility and its benefits to transform the IT operating model and accelerate app lifecycle within enterprise accounts, you actually drive an increase in consumption of license for vCenter, vSphere, Vblock,, vCenter Ops Mgr, vFabric APM, and others. Also it is worth noting that vCloud App Director traction has been very limited, and in many cases it has been given away, so displacing it with Agility Platform to drive consumption of several other VMware products is a smart move. Application modeling and deployment vCloud Automation Center vCenter Operations vCloud Director + Additional Licenses Cloud Infrastructure monitoring and analytics Non-VMware Private & Public Clouds & PaaS Environments VMware-based Private or Public Clouds vCenter and vSphere

11 4 things to remember….. Agility Platform is a comprehensive, purpose-built CMP for enterprise customers Applications and Platforms Drive Business Value… not infrastructure Cloud Governance must be application-centric and extensible Application Release Automation (DevOps) is a priority for large enterprises today
