1 Integrating Technology into Business classes Michael Wong April 24, 2002 This presentation will probably involve audience discussion, which will create action items. 2 Project Summary Inquiry about Business Class Resources on the web. Initially only interested in Integrating a Stock Market Competition into a Class Identify Problems and Issues Create a Web Page with sources of information and links

3 Status Summary Stock Market Game/Competition is in full force at High School. Students Highly interested and involved. Research and Development of Web Page and information sites going good. Teacher is interested in continuing Competition Plan on working on other issues and problems in integration of technologies into classrooms with teacher.

4 The Stock Market Competition Bull vs. Bear

5 Stock Market Competition Set up –Initial rules and regulations open so students and teacher can explore and learn –Rules of CompetitionRules of Competition Plan 1) Students to select companies they know 2) Have students look up those companies 3) Have them invest money and see how it goes Give students information and websites to do research –Gave them articles and links – hoped to have students explore and create their own inquiry questions and find own sites, articles and strategies to tell class.

6 Progress and Evaluation Students are highly competitive – would rather it be called a competition than game. Students not in class want to become involved. –Even have a older sibling at the U of I participating Students are starting to look for information on stocks daily and start inquiries. –Some students starting to look at mutual funds and bonds instead of straight stocks –Inquiring about what makes stock prices move up and down i.e. what makes a good performer –In surveys lots of requests for New York Times / Newspapers Looking into continuing game even after school is out.

7 Problems and Issues Communications with Teacher –We talked a lot through email –I found out how much work teaching really is –How much research must be done before actually using site Students –Understanding of Stocks –Facilitate them a little more – ie discuss a little more before next time –An interest in Competition Digital divide issues No interest as Investment not likely

Competition web site Free Stock quotes web site “Free” –Sign up with new name every two weeks Stock information web sites Free Web Resources Free Use Teacher Resource sites to find free online programs One Resource shows how to find servers to fit storage needed

9 Technology Technology “Fit” room –Had tables for lectures and computers for lab (20 computers) –Problem not enough room for lecture and not enough room for all students in lab Outstanding technical issues that need to be solved –Software installment by technicians –After 4:30 internet access is cut

10 Business Web Resource Site Work to be done –Some critiques, write ups and links need to be added to website When its done it will include –News and Articles –The Stock Market Competition –Business Application Sites How to make a Resume What career interests you have Accounting, Economics, Personal Finance –List of Resources for all fields Probable add most of the web sites of projects, resources that were talked in class (bugscope, Physics Van Outreach)
