2 Look at your group’s résumés Take turns. Using the résumé as a guide, give a short outline of your professional life so far, and your studies. Ask questions, and explain anything unclear. Each person should ONE negative point and ONE positive point about each résumé. –including their own!

3 Use the web if possible Discuss the resume websites you looked –Which resume websites did you look at, George? –Which resume advice site did you find most useful, Mary? –What makes you say that? –Why do you say that? Be ready to summarize your discussion for the class –You can use my computer for that

4 Jobs online An increasing number of worldwide jobs are advertised online. Go to www.monster.com and choose a country where you would like to work.www.monster.com Follow the links to the details of one job that looks interesting. –What is the job title? –Where exactly is the location? – What is the name of the company and contact person? –Why did you choose this job?

8 You are looking for a … (in groups) 1 Decide what job (maybe from last week’s slides, or the textbook; maybe not) Prepare a list of 5 questions you would ask candidates for this job, at an interview. Make the questions relevant to the job you chose: –Flight attendant: Do you like traveling? Do you have good eyesight? –Firefighter: Are you scared of heights? Are you good at driving fast?

9 You are looking for a … (in groups) 2 Each group should look at all the resumes –Decide on two candidates to invite for an interview Go and get the first candidate and ask them your questions –Make notes Then interview the second candidate –Make notes again, and decide who will get the job

10 The world of work http://www.aarp.org/money/work/ Look at the article titles. Explain in English (or Chinese, maybe) what each article is about. Read the article that your group finds the most interesting. Present a summary to the class.

11 Group presentation A: Company orientation You have just recruited some new employees to the sales department! The “orientation meetings” will be on Tuesday 6th –(That is, the four groups will make their presentations on the 6th) Your group members will pretend to be managers in an international company –You will choose which company The group (ALL OF YOU) will give an Orientation talk to the new employees Your group members are in –Senior management (maybe the CEO: give a welcome talk) –The sales department (talk about the department, and the employees’ new jobs –The HR department Company organization (you must do this part and it is important) Facilities for employees (restaurant etc) Conditions, salaries, pensions, counseling… –Other departments (maybe Accounting?)

12 Group presentation A (2) You must study Lesson 5 carefully Make an agenda for the “welcome/ orientation meeting” –State your company (real or fictional, you choose) –Say who will speak –What they will talk about –Print enough copies for the rest of the class Remember to wear your name tags (very important) Resources: –Search the web for “employee orientation agenda” (mostly universities and hospitals, but never mind) –“company structure presentation” and similar –try other searches of your own

13 Group presentation B: Product features You will give a presentation on a product made by your company The presentations will be on Tuesday 13th Your group members will pretend to be sales staff –The company and product can be real or invented More details next week –But you can choose your product and start planning now

14 Group presentation B (2) You must study Lesson 6 carefully Make an invitation for people to go to your presentation –Describe your company (real or fictional, you choose) –Say who will speak –What they will talk about –Print enough copies for the rest of the class –State your product and its great features Remember to wear your name tags (very important) Research ideas: –Think of your own product –Check out what is available. Make your product better! –Get pictures from the web, using Google image search
