Paget’s Trey Hartsock Christian Smith

INTRODUCTION Paget's disease causes bones to grow too large and weak. You can have Paget's disease in any bones in your body, but most people have it in their spine, pelvis, skull, or leg bones. The disease may affect only one bone or several bones, but it does not affect the entire skeleton. Bones with Paget's disease may break more easily, and the disease can lead to other health problems.

Symptoms: Many people do not know they have Paget's disease because they have only slight symptoms. For others, signs and symptoms can include: Pain Enlarged bones Broken bones Damaged cartilage in joints. People who have Paget’s in the skull may suffer from: Headaches Hearing loss Large head size

Statistics About one million people in the United States have Paget's disease. The disease is more common in older people and those of Northern European descent. Men are more likely to suffer from the disease than women.

Effects on Body Heart failure can occur because the effected bones require more blood flow. Vascular steal syndrome is an effect because the spine is deprived of blood. This can cause numbness. Bone cancer because abnormal bone turns cancerous.

Affects of Paget on Effected Individuals Weak bones and muscles would require one to have a helper that would clean walk ways and hall ways to avoid tripping hazards Grab bars would also need to be installed in bathrooms and showers. Weak muscles and bones would make it hard to get in and out of the shower. Also it would help to avoid slipping and falling.

Testing and Detection Detecting Paget’s can be done in three main ways. X-ray Blood test can be done to detect high levels of a chemical substance called serum alkaline. Bone scans are done to determine what specific bones are effected. Testing Urine tests are done to monitor reactions to treatments for Paget's. Urine is tested for a substance called bone markers. One of these substances is called N-telopeptide.

Therapies and Cures Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of calcium and vitamin D. You need both to build strong bones. They do weight-bearing exercise to keep your bones strong. Walking, dancing, or lifting weights may be good, but make sure that you don't put stress on affected bones. Your doctor or physical therapist can suggest exercises for you medications called bisphosphonates or injectable calcitonin.

Surgical Treatments surgical reconstruction is very difficult. surgical management of orthopedic manifestations of the disease has improved the quality of life for these patients.

Prognosis The outlook is generally good. If the diseased takes proper care of the disease they can recover. They may also be bothered by other bone problems and pain. Paget’s disease can not spread to normal bones from infected bone.

Conclusion Paget’s disease is a very dramatic and time consuming disease. It is very easy to detect due to the many symptoms. It is not a very common disease only a very small percentage of people have this disease. The effects of the disease are drastic and painful but can be overcome. Testing for Paget’s is done with x-rays and blood tests. The future of a Paget’s carrier is promising and they should recover somewhat, If proper precautions are taken.
