Interactive Teaching Tools in Combating the Pervasive Menace Interactive Teaching Tools in Combating the Pervasive Menace National Educators’ Workshop Corrosion Session November 6, 2012 Neil G. Thompson, Ph.D., President of The NACE Foundation

The NACE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION The NACE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION The NACE FOUNDATION is making a difference by “inspiring the next generation of corrosion professionals” 2

NACE International The largest society of corrosion professionals in the world – 30,000 members worldwide NACE’s mission is to “Protect people, assets, and the environment from the effects of corrosion” NACE International Foundation Established to support NACE International The Foundation’s mission is to “Inspire the future workforce to engage in the prevention of corrosion through science, engineering and technology” NACE INTERNATIONAL 3

The Current Situation The failing infrastructure is compromising safety and the environment The cost of corrosion to the United States is over $300 billion annually Globally, the economic impact of corrosion is $1.8 trillion Poor corrosion prevention & control IMPACTS –Public safety –The environment –Economy IMPACT OF CORROSION 4 Natural Gas Pipeline Failures

IMPACT OF CORROSION 5 Environment [Crude Oil Pipeline Failure]

The Problem 44% of corrosion professionals will retire in 3 to 7 years Number of graduates with corrosion background is insufficient to meet industry needs Lack of new professionals entering workforce Interest in science and engineering at the secondary education level is low EDUCATION IS NEEDED Laboratory Field Science & Research 6

EDUCATION IS NEEDED Corrosion Erosion Corrosion Rotating Electrode 7

EDUCATION IS NEEDED 8 ModelingSubseaConnector

The Opportunity Create programs to inspire the next generation of corrosion professionals Enhance students experience in science and engineering Inspire teachers by training and providing resources Drive workforce development Attract industry partners THE NACE FOUNDATION 9 Bench Top Large Scale Laboratory

The Solution Scholarships Program cKit Educational Resource Program Teacher Camp Program Workforce Development Program THE NACE FOUNDATION 10

Scholarships 11

NACE Annual Conference –Receive award in person Scholarship Details (2011) –24 students awarded scholarships –$112,000 in scholarships awarded –Scholarships used for educational purposes only –Each Scholarship has its own eligibility requirements Scholarships 12

–Can significantly change the recipients life and career aspirations –More students are introduced to corrosion as a career –Fills the need for corrosion awareness in the engineering workforce Why it Matters 13 Blake Whitley 2012 Scholarship Recipient "The resources that NACE provides to emerging professionals are highly beneficial. NACE is the clear leader for students interested in corrosion studies, and the financial opportunities offered to students like me are outstanding.“ Blake Whitley, University of Alabama

cKit – A Corrosion Resource for Teachers and Students 14

Corrosion Toolkits (cKits) –Includes a hands-on curriculum –Provides corrosion experiments –Clearly explains the effects of corrosion –Comic Book Created for children 8- 15 A fun way to become aware of the effects of corrosion C-Kit Program Above displays a Fruit “Juice” experiment 15

Experiments (c-Kit) –Total of Six Experiments –Meets the National Science Education Standards –Example: Mr. Copper and Miss Sulfate Experiment involving reactivity of different metals in 3% sulfate solution –Example: Fruit “Juice” Objective Finds the corrosion of metals in an acidic environment cKit Program Above displays a Mr. Copper and Miss Sulfate experiment 16

“I love the cKits! They are so helpful & will definitely go to good use in my classroom.” Becky H., Dayton, OH “Thanks for all the wonderful materials for corrosion science. I’ll definitely be able to use them in my classroom.” Scott C., DeKalb, IL “Thank you for the corrosion kit at this camp. It will impact my teaching practice and my students’ learning experiences for years to come! Awesome!” James B., Hattiesburg, MS –Provides a resource to teachers to enhance the classroom experience –80% of teachers introduced to the cKit at the Teacher’s Camp used it in the classroom Why it Matters 17

Teacher Camps in Cooperation with ASM International 18

–Enhances interest in science and engineering in an interactive learning experience –Introduces the importance of corrosion control –Allows students to discover their passion in becoming a corrosion professional Why it Matters 19

Workforce Development 20

–Gives veterans the opportunities they deserve –Helps maintain our infrastructures by facilitating workforce development of trained corrosion professionals – Communicates to others that we believe in the industry and in United States Veterans Why it Matters 21 “NACE has been a life changer for me and my family. I can’t say enough about all the help, time and effort the staff has given to me. I am truly grateful and appreciative of everything and everyone that has come to me from my involvement with NACE. Thank you.” Elliott Henson, Program Participant

The NACE FOUNDATION The NACE FOUNDATION is making a difference by inspiring the next generation of corrosion professionals. 22
