The Asteroid DOOM Scenario Imagine: It is the year 2020 and you are an astronomy student in college. You look up into the sky one night through your telescope. You are shocked to see that millions of miles away, an asteroid the size of Texas is hurtling directly towards the Earth. You make some calculations and groan as you figure out that it will strike the Earth in a little over a year. ARE WE DOOMED?

What Now? Your job is to lead an expedition to somewhere else in the solar system in order to find a place to settle Earthlings. Identify accommodations that enable manned space exploration considering the characteristic of our solar system.

Task #1: Where to go? Where in the solar system would you choose to explore? Why? What do you expect to find there? (realistically) What are all the things you would need to survive?

1.Theresa, a pilot with 25 years of flying experience 2.Max, a small 8 year old boy 3.Sammy, a Navy SEAL member 4.Leon, an expert mechanic 5.Belinda, a geologist (rock/planet specialist) 6.Linda, a veterinarian 7.Xavier, your long-lost uncle in New York 8.Kenji, a very strong carpenter 9.Heather, a mathematician and computer expert 10.Charles, quarterback of the local football team 11. Lafayette, an expert hunter and tracker 12. Janet, a gardener & botanist (plant specialist) 13. Huberto, a doctor 14. Saul, an excellent chef 15. Stanley, a marine-biologist (ocean life.) 16. Shelley, pilot and mother of Andrea 17. Andrea, 2 year-old child of Shelley 18. William, a middle-aged politician 19. Quentin, a NASA scientist 20. Mary, your best friend Task #2: Who to take? Only 20 people believe your story about an asteroid. Due to limited space, you may only take 8 of them. Choose your 8 wisely!! In your journal list the eight lucky crewmembers, and explain why you chose each person.

Justify List the 3 volunteers that were the hardest to leave behind and explain why you made that choice. List the 3 volunteers that were the easiest to leave behind and explain why you made that choice.

Task #3: What do we take? Your ship can only take 1,500 pounds of equipment. From the list ON THE NEXT SLIDE, write the items you will take. Remember, you cannot exceed 1,500 lbs.

Items to Consider 500 lbs. of food 100 lbs. of seeds 100 lbs. of weapons 50 lbs. of general tools 400 lbs. of lumber 200 lbs. of cloth 100 lb. long-distance radio 100 lb. German Shepherd 100 lb. generator 500 lbs. of raw steel 250 lbs. of water 50 lb. computer 50 ob. Medical kit Remember to think about the following: -- temperature --water supply --oxygen -- food --effects of microgravity --energy resources needed to survive Remember, you cannot exceed 1,500 lbs.

Task #4: What to do short term? You arrive months later at your destination. What are your top 5 priorities once you step off the spaceship? (#1 being the most important) What you will assign as tasks to your crew members?

Task #5: Long Term: Planning for the future Your team is satisfied with your findings and progress. This looks like a good place to start a new colony. What major challenges do you see your new colony facing in the next few months or even years. ---List 3 top challenges in your journal ---Explain what you will do to overcome each one

Task #6 Short Story: My Asteroid Doom experience Include details about --how you dealt with the temperature change --Protected yourself from UV rays --Developed a water source --Obtained oxygen --Started and maintained a food supple --Dealt with the affects of microgravity --Energy resources that were used --How did you deal with waste.

Sketch of Your Colonized Area On the back of your short story draw and color a scene showing any detailed event from your Asteroid Doom Experience.
