My Own Space Mission By: Tam-Mara Stevens

Objective Be creative, but logical in designing a space craft that will take you to a destination in the solar system to gather data that can benefit modern society. To explore strange new worlds To seek out new life and new civilizations To boldly go where no man has gone before…

Destination (3 points ) DIRECTIONS : Answer the questions below in complete sentences. Where will you go? Pluto Why do you wish to explore here? Because it is the least studied of all the planets in our solar system. What do you hope to learn from this place? Anything really not much is known about Pluto I’d probably be fascinated with whatever I would find.

Data (3 points ) DIRECTIONS : Answer the questions below in complete sentences. What data do you want to collect here (ex: soil, life forms, etc.) ? Life forms would be amazing seeing how life on Pluto is kind of impossible because it is so cold What instruments will you need to collect and store your data? How will the data you collect be used when you return home?

Societal Benefits (3 points ) DIRECTIONS : Describe at least one benefit your exploration will have for modern society ( ex : found a cure for a disease ). Benefit 1: We would no more about the planet. Not much is known about Pluto so even just arriving would be a huge benefit. Benefit 2 (optional): Why Is NASA Exploring Pluto? NASA sends spacecraft to other planets because exploring space is exciting. It helps people learn new things. Spacecraft have visited every major planet in the solar system. Studying places like Pluto may help scientists learn how planets form. http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/what- is-pluto-k4.htmlhttp://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/what- is-pluto-k4.html

Challenging Conditions (3 points ) DIRECTIONS : Research your destination. Identify at least one condition in your destination that will be challenging ( ex : extreme temperatures ). Then, explain how you plan to overcome these challenges with the design of your spacecraft. Challenging condition 1: Getting there – I plan to overcome this condition by: Getting there would be a HUGE challenge/obstacle because it would take about nine years to get to Pluto and that’s not even including coming back, you have to think we would have to pack enough supplies to last about 18-20 years. The only way I can think to overcome this obstacle is finding/making a faster spacecraft to get us there and back Challenging condition 2 (optional): The atmosphere – I plan to overcome this condition by: Pluto's atmosphere is very thin and consists of nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide - not a breathable mix. An Earth – like habitat would be needed and your own energy source since Pluto is so far away from the sun

Spacecraft Design (8 points ) Description (3 points) Using specific details, describe your spacecraft design here. Remember to include the parts that allowed you to overcome your challenging condition(s) and collect your desired data on the previous slides. Sketch/picture (5 points)

The End Notes: – You may design this template however you wish – If you need help, refer to the recording OR call me
