A Strategic Lens on the use of OCICU Courses to the Benefit of Our Students Robert D. Bunnell, Ed.D., Dean, Jackie Martin, M.S., Senior Academic Advisor Neumann University, Division of Continuing Adult & Professional Studies

How OCICU courses have been to our benefit: Who do they benefit? Undergraduate students from each academic division at our institution. What courses do they take? Majority Arts & Sciences When We offer OCICU in the fall, spring, and summer terms of each academic year. Why To retain students by providing flexible options To allow students to progress in course work that would be otherwise unavailable (catalog sequencing, transfer students)

Review and selection of OCICU Course Options * Fall courses – July Spring courses – October Summer courses – March *dependent upon release of schedule in Member Documents via ocicu.org.

OCICU Course Selection & Recommendation Process List is sent by Dean to the Registrar’s Office System Administrator for administrative input. The Registrar determines course equivalencies. Our System Administrator notifies the entire undergraduate student body that OCICU options are available. *individual terms are created to distinguish/identify OCICU courses as separate from our normal course schedule options. List is reviewed by Deans in other academic divisions. Typically 3-5 days after the list is sent we expect feedback, permission to proceed, or recommendations for courses to eliminate from the OCICU course recommendations. *Reasons why we would eliminate? List is then passed on to share with two other advisors in our academic division. Other advisors highlight courses they recommend. The list is then forwarded back to Senior Advisor. Senior Advisor condenses the list to begin specific recommendations to send to the Dean. She includes the master course schedule in a separate tab so that the other Deans can see all that is available via OCICU. Download schedule, highlight the courses advisees will need based on historical trends and “ears to the ground” academic advising. Senior Advisor cross-checks online courses offered at Neumann to ensure that there is no conflict of recommending courses that are already available online. Senior Advisor checks on a weekly basis to see if Course Schedule is released (member document access, ocicu.org)

A STRATEGIC LENS: Let’s Look at the Numbers 2013-2014

OCICU Study of Enrollments 2013-2014 Motivation: Desire to know who is taking OCICU courses, which courses are in highest demand, and “who” are the students that are taking these courses. Discover possibilities. to gain a sense of the course patterns and number of students enrolling in OCICU courses. Plan: Focus in on one academic year – fall and spring semesters – and look for trends. Needed – term, course section, major, age.

Fall 2013 114 undergraduate students enrolled in 153 online, 8-week mini-term courses offered by the OCICU. The age range of the 114 students who enrolled in an OCICU course in fall 2013 was 20 – 55. The most frequently occurring was 22 years of age. Ages # enrolled students 20 - 29 yrs62 Age ranges 20 -24 = 31 of the 114 students; 25 – 29 are 31 of the 114 students 30 – 39 yrs34 Age ranges 30-34 are 17 of the 114; 35 -39 are 17 of the 114 students 40 – 49 yrs14 Age ranges 40 – 44 are 8 of the 114 students 45-49 are 6 of the 114 students 50 – 554

Draw attention to the courses that were lower enrolled --- these are perfect examples of how having OCICU options allowed our students to progress with their individual degree requirements. OCICU provides a way to meet the need of an online learner as well as… a learner whose course is cancelled Not available in the current term Schedule conflict (class or work shift scheduled at the same time as the class the student needs) 153 courses // 114 individual students

Spring 2014 73 students enrolled in 108 online, 8- week mini-term courses offered by the OCICU. The age range of the 73 students who enrolled in an OCICU course in spring 2014 was 21 – 52. The most frequently occurring was 22 years of age. Ages# enrolled students 20 - 29 yrs49Age ranges ages 21 - 24 are 29 of the 73 students Ages 25 - 29 are 20 of the 73 students 30 – 39 yrs17Age ranges 30-34 are 14/73 students 35 -39 are 3/73 students 40 – 49 yrs6Age ranges 40 – 44 are 3/73 students 45-49 are 3/73 students 50 – 551

Notice the trends lower enrolled courses by which the consortium fills a need common themes from term to term ease of selection for future terms based on historical past course interest 108 courses // 73 individual students

Post-Analysis: OCICU Study of Enrollments Who is the adult-learner on my virtual campus today? How can other academic divisions develop a less traditional approach to traditional students completing their undergraduate degree programs? Are we as educators in higher education prepared to meet the demands of today’s traditional students?

How Do You Select Which OCICU Courses to Offer? Similarities and/or differences? Issues which affect course selection? Are there courses you cannot find which OCICU members might develop?
