5 Who should remain in the Core 4 Curriculum?
Students who have at least a 2.0 GPA by midterm of their 10th grade year. C average or above, no D’s or F’s If a student’s GPA isn’t a 2.0 now, the chance of them bringing their GPA up while taking harder courses in the 11th and 12th grade are very slim. Students whose major requires a 4 year degree and their EXPLORE OR PLAN scores predicted at least a 20 on their ACT Before going over Core 4 requirements, lets ask, Who should stay in the Core 4 curriculum?

6 Let’s look at University Admissions requirements

7 Core 4 Graduation Requirements/TOPS Core

Your grades aren’t good enough for University Admission, but you’d like to attend a Community College first, then transfer to a University.

Core Four Exemption Conference Request New Diploma Options After the student has attended high school for a minimum of two years, the student and the student’s parent or legal guardian may request that the student be exempt from completing the Louisiana Core Four Curriculum and be placed in the Louisiana Basic Core Curriculum. (Bulletin 741: 2318) What is the difference? The Louisiana Core Four Curriculum prepares students for entrance to a four-year university in the State of Louisiana. The Basic Core Curriculum would prepare them for a community college or technical school in the State of Louisiana. Students who “Opt Out” of the LA Core 4 Curriculum will also be required to fulfill their elective credits in a Career Area of Concentration which will be determined at the Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) conference. The student’s IGP would be revised at the conference to fit with the updated diploma option. What is required to change diploma options? Before an exemption is granted, the student, the student’s parent or legal guardian and a school representative shall meet to discuss the student’s progress and determine what is in the student’s best interest for the continuation of his/her future educational plan. At this meeting, all three parties are required to sign the Core Four Exemption Form if the student decides to “Opt Out’. Students will have one opportunity per year to change diploma options which shall be during spring scheduling. Requesting an “Opt Out” Conference with the Counselor If you would like to schedule an appointment with your student’s counselor and discuss your student’s diploma options, please complete the information below. You will be contacted to schedule an appointment time. Conference requests must be returned to your counselor. 27 Introduction The information you are receiving is important for you and your child. You, the school, and the student must work together to ensure that your student achieves his/her educational goals. The informational newspaper, scheduling forms, and applications needed for scheduling will be posted on the PHS website. This will provide you with graduation requirements, scheduling requirements, course summaries and other important information. Read this guide carefully and discuss the scheduling options with your child. Students are NOT allowed to change teachers or courses once the schedules are issued. So please give serious consideration to your selections.

If you ask for a class and receive it, you are expected to stay there for the entire length of the course. Some courses require that you get special approval. Special approval means that you must get the teacher granting permission to sign your schedule request form. Applications are on the PHS website and must be returned to the teacher.

38 Individual Graduation Plans
According to the Career Options Law, every student must have an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) on file at the school. The plan is initiated in 8th grade and will be updated each year. The IGP shall be signed by the student and parent or legal guardian each year. The IGP reflects the curriculum pathway and the recommended sequence of elective courses. The IGP is flexible, yet sufficiently structured, to ensure that a student will meet the high school requirements for admission to a postsecondary education institution or enter the workforce.

39 I will have pre-filled forms in the counselors’ office on the small book shelf just to the right of the door if you want them to help pick out your classes. Powerpoints and forms will also be on the counselors web page under Scheduling Information.

40 IGP – Blank Form I will also have samples printed for Core 4 and Basic Curriculum pre-filled if you’d like to come pick up a copy.
