3. What is CAS?
CAS is a framework for experiential learning, designed to involve you in new roles.
The emphasis is learning by doing and then reflecting on these experiences.
Should be working in groups and include new roles for you.

4. C.A.S. Goals An appreciation of the potential of the human spirit.
Knowledge, skill and understanding.
An awareness of humanitarian issue across the world.
A recognition that education imposes lifelong ethical responsibilities.
Confidence in one’s ability to initiate and adapt to change.

5. Creativity
Wide range of arts and other activities outside the normal curriculum which include creative thinking in the design and carrying out of service activities.

6. Creativity
Music (Recitals, competitions, performances, lessons, NOT practices)
Art, Dance, Theater (Recitals, competitions, performances, lessons, NOT practices)
Photography (beyond just taking snapshots)
Learning experienced outside of school that does NOT count toward a diploma (An art class at a local college, learning another foreign language, a sign language class outside of school)
Planning events and projects for a school, community or international organization (Ultimate Frisbee tournament to raise money for removal of Land Mines)

7. Creativity More Examples:
Newspaper or Yearbook (Outside of school day and beyond what normal homework would require)
Planning Youth Group Activities
Teaching a language to recently arrived immigrant children
Raising funds for Amnesty International/Greenpeace/World Wide Fund for Nature

8. Action
Participation in expeditions, individual and team sports, and physical activities outside the normal curriculum.

9. Action Examples Sports Games
Implementing and carrying out club activities such as outings or service projects
Planning special events in the school and community
Scouting activities
Coaching little league teams
Running a 5k
Canoe trips/Camping
Youth Group activities
Learning new activities (Gymnastics, Scuba-diving, Lifeguard)

10. Service
Projects and activities involve interaction with individuals and groups in the community. The community may be your school, the local district or it may be at national or international level.
Service activities should not only involve doing things for others but also doing things with others and developing a real commitment with them.

11. Service Fund raising/Coat drive Working in a museum (volunteer)
Participating in a summer work project (internship)
Building houses (Habitat for Humanity)
Tutoring children
Implementing and carrying out club activities such as outings or service projects

12. What is not CAS
Any class activity or project, anything assigned a grade
Any activity you get paid for
Doing simple or repetitive work
Forms of duty within family
Fund-raising without a goal
Activity without a supervisor
Activity which causes division among community
Music/dance/theater rehearsals
Club meeting/sports practice
Religious activities
Political activities

13. Guiding Questions: Ask Yourself
Is the activity a role for me?
Is it a real task I am undertaking?
Does it have real consequences for other people and for me?
What do I hope to gain from this?
How does this activity benefit others?
What can I reflect on during this activity? ?

14. Proposal If you question whether an activity will count or not…..

Fill out proposal form on IB/CAS website and turn in to Ms. Siter if you aren’t sure.

15. Evaluation
Informal- Adult leader, informal discussion, meeting with L.E.A.P.
