WHAT IS SCIENCE FICTION?  Lies somewhere between realistic fiction and total fantasy  Usually set in the future world different from our own.

WRITERS IMAGINE HOW PEOPLE MIGHT BEHAVE IN SITUATIONS INVOLVING NEW TECHNOLOGY

ELEMENTS  SCIENCE  Setting: future or remote past On another planet Or spaceship  TECHNOLOGY of today +  That has not yet been developed or invented but that follows the laws of science. The scientific method

Plot ELEMENTS -TIME TRAVEL -IMAGINARY CREATURES – ALIENS, EXTRA TERRESTRIALS, ROBOTS -REALISTIC HUMAN REACTIONS TO FANTASTIC SITUATIONS. -A SURPRISE ENDING – SOMETIMES-

DETAILS  REALISTIC Those that are real in the present. homes, cars, cell phones, school, families  FUTURISTIC  Those that are NOT real in the present and are presented in a future world or time. Space homes Flying cars Time travel

EXTRAPOLATED IDEAS  Extrapolate means: to estimate something unknown based on known facts (Webster)  It is the process of imagining relatively probable worlds of the future by using logical extensions of scientific and cultural trends.

Extrapolated Idea  There is still good and evil in the world- that plays out in the galaxy on other planets. Star Trek – The Federation fights against the Borg population. Space ships fighting each other and visiting other planets to keep the space world free. This is like the US fighting to help other nations free themselves from tyranny.

Extrapolated Idea  Technology becomes so advanced that humans do not have to do much for themselves. They become lazy and perhaps overweight. Example: Think of the movie, “Wall –E” and the people sitting in the moving “cars”

TRENDS  SCIENTIFIC cell phone apps Ipads Hd tvs Smart homes Genetic cloning Artificial limbs, etc. Ebooks Smart cars/smart houses Apps  CULTURAL Kids using cell phones Families on the go 24/7 Media madness Families eat out often Consumerism and pollution Less active

Other thoughts to consider  Science fiction lets the reader “view” the future through the eyes of the writer  SF writers often comment on HUMAN BEHAVIOR  EARLY SCIENCE FICTION WORKS:  Frankenstein  20,000 Leagues Under the Sea  The Time Machine  War of the Worlds  Twilight Zone

SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES/BOOKS  RAY BRADBURY NOVELS & SHORT STORIES  THE PEDESTRIAN  THE VELDT  ALL SUMMER IN A DAY  FAHRENHEIT 451  ET  Close Encounters of the Third Kind  Signs  Unwind  Everlost  Avatar  The Uglies
