Technology Services 2015 SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

SCLS Technology Five Year Plan SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Objective: SCLS will listen to the libraries, stay on top of technology trends, and allocate time and resources to be innovative and deploy new projects as rapidly as possible. Goal 1: Take advantage of new technology in order to help our member libraries meet their communities changing needs SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Lego Mindstorm kits (SCLS Foundation grant) Maker space kits (LSTA grant) Mobile device management discovery phase Library Online: SIP2 authentication Kaspersky web filtering for patron computers pilot Library Online: extend in-use booking Implementation for Collection HQ Bibliotheca support Credit card payment for LINKcat Goal 1: Take advantage of new technology in order to help our member libraries meet their communities changing needs: 2015 Goals SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Objective: SCLS already provides technology training opportunities and information to member libraries. However, we have identified a need to provide opportunities to meet basic technology competency levels and an increased need to assist library staff with the ability to help their patrons with technology. We will expand opportunities in both areas. Goal 3: Provide Technology Training opportunities for library staff SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Complete list of competencies with other library systems Identify existing training opportunities for library staff to meet the competencies Technology day Mindstorm and maker space kits training Gadgets and OverDrive training Program on best practices for teaching technology to patrons Tech Bits & Tech news Goal 3: Provide Technology Training opportunities for library staff. 2015 SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Objective: We will evaluate each service and challenge assumptions about how things are done. We will evaluate current services and design new services to be efficient and easily supported. This will allow us to create economies of scale, expand capacity of service and provide new services Goal 4: Conduct evaluation of technology services to look for efficiencies to allow for scalability SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Service Evaluation prep work: develop criteria Prioritize services to evaluate Begin a discovery phase regarding the feasibility of moving to a regional datacenter or cloud hosted solution Authentication discovery phase Disaster recovery discovery phase Network Management/Monitoring Drupal Evaluation Discovery Phase Goal 4: Conduct evaluation of technology services to look for efficiencies to allow for scalability SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Objective: Increasing bandwidth in libraries has been a focus for SCLS for several years, but it wasn’t until the Badgernet fiber project that we were once again able to have confidence in the success of this goal. SCLS will continue to improve the infrastructure to meet the increasing bandwidth needs of libraries into the future. Goal 5: Prepare the network infrastructure to meet the bandwidth needs of libraries into the future SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

MUFN additions Network equipment upgrades phase 2 (LSTA grant and additional Teach opportunities) Library fiber opportunities (CANs) Goal 5: Prepare the network infrastructure to meet the bandwidth needs of libraries into the future SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Objective SCLS has a long-standing goal of using LINKcat as the portal to library resources. We will provide searching and access to item availability for statewide databases (such as BadgerLink and the Wisconsin’s Digital Library) as well as local digital collections. We will also explore options for storing and retrieving libraries’ digital collections. Goal 2: Integrate E-content into LINKcat SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

LibLime Koha Code base merger Explore options for storing and retrieving digital objects (e-books, local materials, photos, etc.) Pursue copy-level integration with 3 rd party databases such as OverDrive and BadgerLink database (Ebscohost, Netlibrary) Goal 2: Integrate E-content into LINKcat SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014

Merged LibLime Koha Codebases Major improvements to cataloging New Discovery Layer Integration with Google maps or Esri (geotagging) Integration with Digital Library Service One code base! More opportunities for development partnership.

SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014 Koha Discovery Layer “Overlaid on top of Koha”—17 WALDO libraries are using Improved response time (items aren’t invoked in results) Same look and feel as Koha OPAC—no major interface change for patrons Staff and patrons search same interface (one URL) JavaScript (instead of XSL templates) API built in Integration with PTFS Digital Library System

SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014 Digital Library System Koha Discovery Layer DLS Bridge API (fee but included in OverDriveSCLS contract) Ebscohost Archivalware (Digital Content) (additional fees)

SCLS All Director’s Meeting November 20, 2014 Stability of LibLime (PTFS) Major government library going live on November 28 Two more already signed; more are interested SCLS and other LibLime customers will benefit as well.
