1 Safety Plan By: Andrea Tomaselli

2  To further my safety knowledge as a teacher of science, I will take a one-day lab safety seminar, through the Laboratory Safety Institute. (http://www.labsafety.org/examples.htm#one)  Students will all sign a safety contract from the Flinn Scientific website. If they break the rules from the contract more than three times then they will have to take the safety exam from the Flinn Scientific website. (http://www.flinnsci.com/Sections/Safety/safety_contracts.asp) http://www.flinnsci.com/Sections/Safety/safety_contracts.asp By having the students sign a safety contract through the Flinn website, I will be certain that they know exactly what is expected of them and how they are to behave during science experiments. This contract clearly outlines important safety rules, and it requires that the parents also sign. The students will also take a safety exam from the Flinn Scientific website, so I can be certain they have not simply read the contract. This will help me asses their understanding of safety in the science lab, and will further enhance their understanding of safety procedures and expectations. (http://www.flinnsci.com/Sections/Safety/safety_contracts.asp ) The students will also take a safety exam from the Flinn Scientific website, so I can be certain they have not simply read the contract. 3  Students will be obligated to purchase their own goggles and aprons for experiments and they will be stored in the lab room at all times. They must wear them for all experiments that use any dangerous chemicals, liquids or anything that could cause harm to the arms or bodies.  Long hair will be tied back, loose jewelry will be removed until after the lab, and no loose-fitting clothing will be allowed. This is important if Bunsen burners are being used, and it will help prevent accidents where loose fitting articles may come in contact with the flame.  Students must follow the instructions explicitly in the lab  Fire blankets and fire extinguishers will be readily available, from the Flinn website, in order to smother fires. These items will be placed in an area accessible to the teacher and students, and they will be clearly labeled to make sure the students know where to find these items in case of an emergency.  There will be a safety shower, eye wash station, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, biohazard cleanup kit, and fire alarm switch clearly labeled in the room. Safety

4  If there are animals in the classroom they may not be touched without permission of the teacher. They may not be let out of their cages without permission of the teacher.  When choosing a classroom animal, I will make sure to be aware of any allergies of students. Animals that are appropriate are frogs, crabs, rodents, rabbits, common birds, nonpoisonous snakes, some reptiles, fish, and turtles. These animals require minimal work, which makes them ideal. Animal Use

5 Chemicals  All chemicals will be clearly labeled and also must contain a poisonous label on them.  All flammable liquids will be stored in a flammable cabinet, and all acids will be stored in a wooden acid cabinet. They will all be stored at or below eye level.  Hazardous chemicals will be stored in a locked safety storage cabinet. Smoke detectors will be installed near chemcial storage areas. Students will be required to thoroughly wash their hands after each lab. Students will be required to thoroughly wash their hands after each lab. Chemical containers will be checked periodically for rust, corrosion, and leakage. Chemical containers will be checked periodically for rust, corrosion, and leakage.  Some chemicals might be: Arsenic & Arsenic Compounds, Carbon Disulfide, Chromium and Chromium Compounds, Chlorine, Chloroform, Ethylene Thiourea, Formaldehyde, Hydrogen Sulfide, Lead Acetate, Lead Chloride, Lead Phosphate, Mercury and mercury compounds, Nickel, Potassium Chromate, Saccharin, Silver Nitrate, Thiourea, Barium Peroxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, Potassium Chlorate, and Potassium Permanganate. These should be labeled according to the Flinn Scientific website. http://www.flinnsci.com/Sections/Safety/chemicalSafety/dosNdonts.asp. http://www.flinnsci.com/Sections/Safety/chemicalSafety/dosNdonts.asp The Flinn Scientific catalogue will be used for disposal of chemicals, pages 1069-1093. The Flinn Scientific catalogue will be used for disposal of chemicals, pages 1069-1093. In case of a chemical spill: Clear all students out of the area, ventilate or evacuate if needed, remove all flammable materials if needed, wear goggles, aprons and gloves, poor sand around the spill and into the spill, pour absorbent around the spill and in the spill, if necessary pour a neutralizer over the spill, use a plastic dustpan and broom to cleanup the chemicals, and finally put into a heavy duty garbage bag. 6 First Aid The classroom will be organized and clearly labeled with all items needed for student safety. The students will be aware of where safety equipment is located. We will go over this our first day in the lab. The classroom will be organized and clearly labeled with all items needed for student safety. 7 Clean-up Procedures As the teacher, I will make students aware that they are required to clean up after themselves. As the teacher, I will make students aware that they are required to clean up after themselves. After each lab, the students will remain in the lab until their area is cleaned up. After each lab, the students will remain in the lab until their area is cleaned up. We will begin with disposal of any hazardous material. We will begin with disposal of any hazardous material. I will give clear directions before and after each lab about clean-up, so the students are aware of what is expected of them. The students must be aware that I am not there to clean up after them, it is their responsibility. Clean up will be incorporated into their lab grade, those students who do not clean up after themselves will see this reflected in their grade. 8  This will be implemented in the classroom through a few steps. First, the students will sign the Flinn Scientific contract. It will all be explained to them and the importance to all of the different parts. They will be then given a three-step safety classroom management program. Before each lab the students will have a list of safety requirements or rules for the lab. The students will be given one warning the first time that they break a safety rule during the year. The second time they will be asked to take the safety quiz from Flinn scientific. http://www.flinnsci.com/Documents/miscPDFs/Safety_exam_MS.pdf. If the third time they break another rule they will be asked to research the rule that they have broken each time and they must understand what could happen to them if they broke the rules. http://www.flinnsci.com/Documents/miscPDFs/Safety_exam_MS.pdf As mentioned earlier, the students will be aware of where the safety equipment is located, and also how to use it. The students will be aware that in some experiments they will be dealing with hazardous chemicals, or animals, and we will discuss the proper procedures when necessary. Their contracts will be kept on file in case students need a reminder of what they have agreed to in the science lab.
