5 Modernising Library Services WDC funding and ownership National Core Content April 03 integration with NeLH partnerships with HE JISC CIE - and others working closely with NHSU working closely with NKS

6 NKS Aims access to common knowledge cores for NHS staff and the public a coherent and comprehensive framework in which common standards are developed at local and national levels all users of the NKS have support and training best value in acquiring knowledge and information produced outside the NHS

7 National Core Content (England) indexing and Abstracting Databases –Medline, Cinahl, Psycinfo, Embase, British Nursing Index, Amed and DH- Data –supplied by Thompson Dialog full text journals –database of over 850 journals covering Medicine, Psychology and Nursing –linked to the indexing and abstract databases –supplied by Proquest Information and Learning –Ebsco Business collection - over 100 journals +

8 National Core Content (England) Biomed Central Membership –available to NHS in England from April 1 st 2003 –allows authors to publish to the Biomed collection of freely available peer reviewed journals –allows the NHS to establish its own journal titles at no additional cost –can be accessed from any location using Athens access system –a start on freeing up the literature

9 National activity Main Forum meeting 4 June NHS and JISC - Health Knowledge Infrastructure National Knowledge Service (NKS) UK Library Service Development Group Others - CHILL, Peoples Network etc Library and Knowledge Development Network talking, sharing, building

10 NHS/HE Forum focus on IT connectivity met 4 times pilot projects disseminate information re connectivity solutions JISC and NHS funding

11 NHS/HE Forum Library issues subgroup NHS and HE representation NHS LA; Core Content Group;LKDN; Wales;Scotland;N Ireland HE CURL; JISC;SCONUL ACHS met Jan, Apr, June focus on funding and content task and finish group commission and fund issues report

12 Users First scoping study –funded by NHS, SCONUL, JISC,LLIDU capture issues and barriers alert main Forum to these propose solutions initiate pilots lead to real change

13 Users First methodology –commissioning brief –desk research, interviews –consultation and revision –discussed at Library Forum –Final draft April/May –NHS/HE Forum 4 June –Librarians Group 6 June
