Service-Learning @ ASAS Service-Learning at ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN SCHOOL GOLD COAST- QUEENSLAND

Service-Learning @ ASAS What is Service–Learning? What does an ASAS graduate look like? Lifelong active and engaged citizens in local, national and international communities. Is a “way of teaching” to nurture global citizens. Is a pedagogy of engagement Is embedded in the P-12 academic curriculum- thus ensuring sustainability Is reflective, changing us from the “inside out” Is “assessable” Connects learning to giving Aims to change both recipient and provider of the service Reflects the values and mission of ASAS and takes them further

Service-Learning @ ASAS Models of Service-Learning at ASAS 1. Direct Service-uses curriculum connections through achievement standards in the specific learning areas, as well as through the General Capabilities and the Cross –Curriculum Priorities from the new national curriculum. Every student in the year level or subject participates. 2. Indirect Service- still involves a whole year level or subject, but the service activity is not usually embedded in the formal curriculum. It may or may not have written learning outcomes as part of a unit of work. However, community engagement and reflection is still an important part of this type of service-learning. 3. Advocacy- involves groups of students who influence the School culture and inspire others to value and participate in service activities. They also enhance relationships with our community partners at the local, national and international level.

Service-Learning @ ASAS General Capabilities: Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding focus on ways of being, behaving and learning to live with others, and are more strongly represented in some learning areas than others. A continua of learning have been developed for each general capability, to describe the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills at particular points of schooling. Students need opportunities to develop these capabilities over time and across learning areas. www.australiancurriculum.edu.au

Service-Learning @ ASAS “I tell you this: anything you did for one of my brothers here, however humble, you did for me…..” (St Matthew 25. 37-40) “We teach children of all ages literacy and numeracy, Science and Geography, History and Chemistry and it is important that we do. It helps them to learn about their world, to inform them. But we also teach Service Learning; we teach children about the joys of service and giving, embedding notions of service in the curriculum at every year level. This has the capacity to transform them. Providing information is an integral part of a school’s operations; but providing the possibility of transformation is something else altogether.” Patrick Wallas, Headmaster, All Saints Anglican School
