3 What is CLD? “Community Learning and Development describes a way of working with and supporting communities, to increase the skills, confidence, networks and resources they need to tackle problems and grasp opportunities. To help individuals and communities tackle real issues in their lives through community action and community–based learning”. (Working and Learning Together 2004)

4 Joint Statement in 2008 to Chairs of Community Planning Partnerships Stated that CLD can: Play a vital role in relation to a range of national and local outcomes Support young people to become confident individuals, effective contributors, responsible citizens and successful learners. Offer lifelong learning in communities enabling the development of skills that can be used in employment, the community, further learning…… Contribute to community empowerment through people working together to achieve lasting change in their communities.

5 Distinctive Contribution? People choose to participate. Work builds from where people are. Young people/adults are partners in a learning process. Sees people as being an asset to their community not a problem. Universal – open to all, particular focus on those in greatest need. Community-based, accessible Informal
