Summer 2011 Congregation Survey Overview and Insights August, 2011 Jeff Wells

Overview Responses –Overview of Survey –Congregation/respondent demographics Interesting Tabular and Comment Data Crosstab Analysis Insights

Overview 118 Total Responses –106 electronic, 12 paper –95% plus who started finished survey –Difficult to take survey twice to adjust data –Response rate excellent As percentage of total congregation Absolute number over 100 provides some statistical surety

Congregation/Respondent Demographics 91% Caucasian, 2% African American and 5% prefer not to answer 65% live in DC with the rest split evenly between MD and VA 63% Male and 37% female 33% college and 64% postgraduate degrees 41% single, 33% married and 25% partnered/committed relationship

Congregation/Respondent Demographics How Long Have You Attended/Been A Member?

Congregation/Respondent Demographics How Old Are You?

Congregation/Respondent Demographics Approximate Household Income

Interesting Responses Nearly half of all respondents first heard of All Souls through a friend but then only 23% first came because a friend brought them. Nearly half came on their own the first time. If only naming one thing that keeps people coming, it’s “People/sense of community” that keeps 51% with Liturgy 25% and Preaching 14% coming 31% did not attend a church of any kind for 1-2 years (or more) before coming to All Souls… Overwhelming majority (81%) feel well informed about life in the parish –Soft/hard copy of the bulletin (soft best), web site and quarterly newsletter all good ways. –Keep doing what we’re doing (might be interesting to look at ASC Web site visit stats) to see how many really use/visit Washington Post edged out Web for where most people get their general news and local paper (e.g. Northwest Current) and neighborhood listserves/web sites) are where people get their community news

Interesting Responses -2 If you didn’t know about All Souls, the neighborhood paper, a postcard mailer, Washington Post and neighborhood listserves would be good ways to reach out and tell you (but don’t forget what the data says about friends!) 78% listened to WAMU – 54% regularly although respondents thought radio would be a poor way to reach out to people 98% would feel comfortable inviting a friend to church Attracting younger adults – many themes but no overwhelming ones – needs further study but see focus slide for ideas Attracting families – better Sunday School needed One thing you could change about All Souls – see next slide How best to reach out and attract newcomers – clearly needs a dedicated team to do this. Lots of great input/insights from survey comments

Interesting Responses -3 If I Could Change One Thing At All Souls What Would It Be?

Focus: Marrieds – How Are They Different? 67% came from another parish Nearly 58% think more Sunday School would help ASC be more welcoming to families Many would like more youth/family programs

Focus: Did Not Attend Church At All Before All Souls – How Are They Different? 41% members 6-10 years 39% more than 10 years 53% Age 51-65 (rest evenly divided) Frequent mention they came because of Washington Post article More mention outreach through mailings

Focus: Under 40 Crowd More Web use - 41% use to get their community news – love soft copy of bulletin but also local paper and neighborhood listserves 92% listen to WAMU Beauty of the building and garden mentioned To welcome more under 40s a strong theme of social events (lose the word Koinoinia), more mission/outreach – hands on activities, outreach to local universities Change one thing: “clone Beddingfield,” more mission outreach – don’t just give $, more community outreach at events like Adams Morgan day

Focus: Have Attended ASC For Less than 2 Years Like preaching/liturgy/sense of community equally 72% were attending another parish Most get community news from Post or Web Advocate reaching out by sponsoring the wine/cheese, participating in community events or sponsoring events for the local community Evenly divided across age segments - unlike current congregation demographic
