3 Warm-Up What are some resources you can use in planning your career?
CHAPTER 9 4/20/2017 Warm-Up What are some resources you can use in planning your career? Chapter 9, Lesson Plans Day 1 Have students answer the warm-up on a separate sheet of paper while you take attendance. Answer: resources that can be used in planning a career include research tools on the Internet or in the library, organizations such as FBLA, school guidance counselors, and talking with people who work in various careers. Hand out the Chapter 8 & 9 pre-test (tell students it is not graded except for participation) Have students hand it back in Pass out the Chapter 9 study guide Chapter 9 ITB

4 The Career Planning Process
CHAPTER 9 4/20/2017 The Career Planning Process Occupation: a task or series of tasks that is performed to provide a good or service. Career: a goal for work that is fulfilled through an occupation or series of occupations. Career planning: the process of studying careers, assessing yourself and making decisions about a future career. Make sure students have their chapter 8-9 study guides. Section 9.1 is pages 202 – 206 in the book Have students give an example for an occupation and a career (my occupation is a teacher at RTHS, but my career is teaching/education) Chapter 9 ITB

Why would it be important to determine your interests, values, talents and abilites? (so you can pick a career you are interested in and have skills for you will be more successful and happy) Chapter 9 ITB

Ask how many have been in a job interview? – talk about what happens (briefly) in a job interview Chapter 9 ITB

CHAPTER 9 4/20/2017 (continued) THE CAREER PLANNING PROCESS Step 5: Employment Acceptance Salary and financial factors Organizational environment Step 6: Career Development and Advancement Practice career success behaviors Develop strong work relationships When you receive an offer you will need to consider the salary and any other financial factors with the job…such as benefits, distance of driving, etc. Can you support yourself with this salary. While in your career you will need to continue to practice success behaviors – what could these include? (showing up to work on time, having a good attitude, always trying your best); Why is it important to develop strong work relationships? Hand out the Likes/Dislikes worksheet and have the students go through and answer this. Chapter 9 ITB

CHAPTER 9 4/20/2017 GROWTH CAREER AREAS Geographic influences Mobility: the willingness and ability of a person to move where jobs are located. Locational unemployment occurs when jobs are available in one place but go unfilled because qualified people live elsewhere. Economic and industry trends service fields are expected to have most employment potential Geographic influences on jobs– this is where the jobs are… certain jobs/career areas are in certain geographic locations Some of you may decide to move where the greatest potential for getting a job in your career area is available. Some of you will decide to stay in the area you are already in and find a job in that area. Sometimes that is ok, other times it could cause locational unemployment There are economic trends as well that affect career areas such as economic trends and business activities. Consumer demand, changing demographics and new technology often affect career opportunities. You need to consider your abilities, talent and interests along with the business trends when deciding what career area to go into. Assignment: have students complete #3 on page 226 (under Communicate Business Concepts) – make sure students use complete sentences to answer this. If they do not use complete sentences it will not be graded. If there is time – have students read the article “What it takes to be Great” – talk about it – use the questions. Chapter 9 ITB

34 CHAPTER 9 4/20/2017 Scenario Shondra Keller graduated from RTHS in 2004, and received an associates degree in nursing from Parkland college in May She worked at Champaign County Nursing home from October 2004 – July 2006 as a CNA and She also worked at Carle Hospital as a nurse from May 2007 to now. She has good communciation, computer, and math skills. She also voluteers at Crisis Nursery and plays adult league softball. Walk through the scenario and create a resume with the kids Hand out the sample resume/cover letter See attached on how they should write the resume When done, hand out the Job Application/Resume activity – Go through the directions.
