12 Desertification The main cause of desertification is due to severe drought. In addition, grazing herds of animals leave the grass so destroyed that the top layer of soil eventually turns to dust. Over time the combination of the two leave behind miles of desert.

13 The Sahel Semi-arid tropical savanna eco-region in Africa, which forms the transition between the Sahara to the north and the slightly less arid savanna belt to the south, known as the Sudan (not to be confused with the country of the same name).
