The Celebration of Passover Marks Gospel 14/15 DEATH 1.How did Jesus die? (Mark 15:24) “They crucified him.” The actual cross was the culmination of a methodical torture process Death was designed to be very slow It was always made very public Crucifixion was actually passive in the sense that the victim eventually killed himself. 2. How sure can we be that Jesus did in fact die? (Mark 15:25,33,37,44-45) A squad of four men, professionally trained as an execution team (v. 24) Many casual observers, interested only in watching the spectacle (v. 29, 35) to its bitter end and inevitable conclusion Some family and friends, risking everything, desperate for Jesus to somehow survive the ordeal (v. 40,43) The Roman centurion who’s reputation and life depended upon him being right (v. 39, 44-45) The fanatical religious leaders, bitter enemies of Christ, not about to let their murder plan fail at the last hurdle.
