2 Counselors Must Value… Career exploration and awareness Career planning The development of a student in all areas Transitioning students to the next level Programs of study as the plan for the student growth Programs of study as the center of a guidance program Working with students

3 Counselors Must Understand… The world is changing  Skills that are relevant now will most likely be obsolete by the time our students graduate  Many students graduating from high school now will work in positions that do not even exist when they graduate from college  Flexibility and technology are key Our guidance and the Programs of Study that we provide will play a large role in a student’s life after their K-12 education

4 Counselors Must Provide… The tools for students to develop  Academically, Personally-Socially, and Professionally (Career development) Skills in  Self-Assessment, Decision making, Goal setting, and Career planning

5 Programs of Study Integral part of overall educational plan Outcome-based Planned stages Accountability Various strategies Delivered by a team  Counselor, Teacher, Parent, Community K-20 application

6 K-5: Career Awareness Introduction to the world of careers 6-8: Career Exploration Discovering interest areas Grade 8: Transition Choosing a career cluster and major (can change easily at any time later) 9-12: Career Preparation Academics and technical courses, intensive guidance, individual graduation plans Postsecondary: Career Preparation Achieving credentials: college, certification, apprenticeship, military Employment: Career Advancement Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning Steps to Success

8 ASCA Guidelines Appropriate Counseling Activities Designing individual student academic programs Interpreting cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests Counseling students with excessive tardiness or absenteeism Counseling students with disciplinary problems Counseling students about appropriate school dress Collaborating with teachers to present guidance curriculum lessons Analyzing grade-point averages in relationship to achievement Interpreting student records Providing teachers with suggestions for better study hall management Ensuring student records are maintained in accordance with state and federal regulations Assisting the school principal with identifying and resolving student issues, needs and problems Collaborating with teachers to present proactive, prevention-based guidance curriculum lesson Inappropriate Counseling Activities Registering and scheduling all new students Administering cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests Signing excuses for students who are tardy or absent Assisting with duties in the principal’s office Working with one student at a time in a therapeutic, clinical mode Performing disciplinary actions Sending home students who are not appropriately dressed Teaching classes when teachers are absent Computing grade-point averages Maintaining student records Supervising study halls Clerical record keeping
