3 What can the institution do? What can the student do? The Triple C Model has been created and evolved to optimise the retention and performance of students. Some successful techniques are related to institutional responsibilities and behaviours. Some successful techniques are related to student responsibilities and behaviours. This workshop is concerned mainly with student responsibilities and behaviours.

6 Getting students off to a good start - workshop activity 1 Using the post-it notes provided, complete the following questions. The main reason college students come to university is.. The thing that college students worry about most when coming to university is …….. Now stick your completed post it notes onto the posters at the front of the room.

8 Let’s get into groups and introduce ourselves.

9 Clarifying expectations of an HE environment The transitioning students have met the entry requirements and are therefore successful learners. Some approaches that have worked for students at college may not continue to work at university. What are the students’ study habits and skills and how do these need to evolve to achieve a successful transition?

10 Helping students to become more independent learners - workshop activity 2 Think of an example of a student who has not successfully transitioned from college to university. What are the main factors that get in the way of students studying/learning and what can we do to help? Each group will feed back their findings.

16 Personal reflection - role playing We will now divide into pairs and look at a number of scenarios based on real student/staff interaction. The aim of the role play is to explore how we can encourage students to critically reflect on their performance at the end of the first trimester or academic year.
