So what makes me so smart about GPS? Lifelong fascination with maps & navigation Extensive experience with navigation in aviation, marine and vehicular applications Experience with different brands and models of LORAN and GPS equipment in aviation, marine and vehicular applications Computer professional for 30 years

What will you learn from this MapSource Course? How to navigate around in the MapSource program The essential 5 MapSource tools Constructing custom routes Constructing custom routes that are as portable as possible to give to other GPS users Working with tracks

What will you learn from this MapSource Course? Using MapSource to manage your GPS data Using multiple maps with MapSource and your GPS Learn to use a couple of free, very handy utility programs to use along with MapSource

Caveats Learning to exploit the full capabilities of the Mapsource program will require you to put some time and effort into working with it Expectations: You know how to use Windows You have worked with and know how to use your GPS (this is not a ‘how to use your GPS’ course) You have at least installed and launched MapSource on your PC

MapSource program and maps MapSource program Maps data (e.g., City Navigator)

MapSource version 6.13.7

MapSource version 6.15.6

The MapSource Program User Interface Program main menu Primary tools tool bar Track tools tool bar Maps selection list box User data tabs GPS Upload / Downlaod buttons Find tool bar

The Five Essential Tools The pan (‘hand’) tool – move map around in the window The zoom tool – zoom in and out to see more or less detail and map area The select tool – select objects on the map to work with The waypoint tool – create waypoints on the map The route tool – create routes following roads on the map

The Pan (‘Hand’) tool Quickly and easily move the map around in the window Shortcut key : ‘H’ (‘Hand’) Select the tool (click on it) Pan map around by holding left mouse button down and dragging the tool around

The Zoom tool Zoom in and out on the map to view more or less map area, or more or less map detail Shortcut key : ‘Z’ (‘Zoom’) Select the tool (click on it) Zoom in by left-clicking mouse. Each left click zooms a little more. Will center map at zoom tool location. Or hold left mouse button down while dragging to draw zoom ‘box’, then release button to zoom in to drawn box. Zoom out by clicking right mouse button. Each right button click will zoom out a little more.

The Select tool Select objects (waypoints, routes, tracks) on the map to work with Shortcut key : ‘S’ (‘Select’) Select the tool (click on it) Select object to work with by positioning mouse arrow cursor over object, then clicking left mouse button once. Selected object will highlight in some manner. Right-clicking most selected objects will pop up a context menu of options for that object.

The Waypoint tool Create waypoints on the map to save important locations that you want to use. Shortcut key : ‘W’ (‘Waypoint’) Select the tool (click on it) Position the waypoint mouse cursor at the location where you want to create the waypoint. Fill in properties that you want for the waypoint, then click the ‘OK’ button.

The Route tool Use to create routes that can later be downloaded to your (and others’) GPS. Shortcut key : ‘R’ (‘Route’) Select the tool (click on it) Left click at origin point, then left click at destination point. Route will automatically calculate. We’ll spend time learning to do advanced routing techniques.

Two Additional Basic Tools The distance measuring tool – quickly measure distances on the map without creating a route or track. Shortcut key : ‘D’ (‘Distance’) The map tile selection tool – select map tiles for downloading to the GPS device. Shortcut key : ‘M’ (‘Map’) Details on how to use later in course

Additional Map Navigation Keys , Ctrl-  : Move the map up a little; a lot , Ctrl-  : Move the map down a little; a lot , Ctrl-  : Move the map left a little; a lot , Ctrl-  : Move the map right a little; a lot + : Zoom the map in Zoom the map out - :

Working With Multiple Map Products on Your GPS Device When maps from multiple products are installed on your GPS device, there is a hierarchy of maps that determines which map you are viewing: City Navigator maps – have Highest hierarch priority, so These are the maps you see. VVMapping maps GPS device built-in base map

Working With Multiple Map Products on Your GPS Device Disabling the highest hierarchy priority map product ‘exposes’ the map product at the next layer down the hierarchy: City Navigator maps are disabled in the maps setup on your GPS Now the VVMapping maps become visible. GPS device built-in base map

Working With Multiple Map Products on Your GPS Device Disabling the highest hierarchy priority map product ‘exposes’ the map product at the next layer down the hierarchy: City Navigator maps are disabled in the maps setup on your GPS VVMapping maps are disabled in the maps setup on your GPS. Now only the GPS device built-in base map is visible.

Working With Multiple Map Products on Your GPS Device Disabling a lower hierarchy map while leaving a higher hierarchy map enabled produces no visible change in map being displayed: City Navigator maps are still en- abled and are higher hierarchy than the VVMapping maps, so they are the maps you see. VVMapping maps are disabled GPS device built-in base map
