Recycling Project By- Tenzin Samphel

Description Of Project Try putting recyclable bins in various spots of TRCS. (According to Jose, the high school, produces the most garbage so we will need to place more bins in the high school section.) Since this project requires a lot of cooperation from the students, I believe teachers must really encourage their students to take the time to properly recycle in the future bins. There will be 3 bins and a label will be put on top of each bin saying what types of materials can be thrown in each one of them. If things may not work properly, we can even charge a small fine to students who are caught recycling incorrectly.

Short-Term Impacts The immediate effect of this project will be the improved cleanliness in our school. If most of the students will recycle properly then our school will truly be more clean and more organized. If this project were to be effectively executed, the lives of janitors will be a lot easier since they will now have to spend less time separating recyclable materials such as papers, plastics, glass, etc. It will save the school some money because we can put those recyclable materials in the machines that give money in return. For example, plastic and glass bottles and cans will can be exchanged for quarters. (There is a machine like this located in 63 rd street, queens boulevard)

Long-Term Impacts Even though paper can be easily remade from recycled paper, millions of trees are cut down every year by paper making industries. By recycling paper we will be saving many trees from being cut down. It takes less energy to produce products from recycled goods in comparison to fresh materials. So another long-term effect will be the conservation of energy resources needed to create things. We will also be conserving many nonrenewable resources through this project. A very long term impact which will occur but we won’t even realize will be the reduction of greenhouse gases. (By recycling we will reduce the amount of production of virgin{fresh} materials from companies which will lead to less pollution and greenhouse gases emitted from the factories of these companies. Hence, we will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2 and slowly but surely decelerate global warming.

Structure and Permissions For this project to run smoothly we will firstly need the consent of the principal. By compelling her that recycling will lead to a healthier community in Renaissance, we can get some financial boost on the project. However to make it easier for the school to finance us the money we can do fundraisers, and make profits by selling some different types of edible snacks in the lunchroom, etc.

How Can Everybody Get Involved? In the beginning all of the students in the class can go around the school and pick where the recycle bins should be located. We can also make good-looking posters all around the school showing the importance of recycling and how small actions by an to what should be thrown in each bin will also be a task for this project. Lastly we can have make information sessions in which our class can teach all of the students the importance of recycling. So all in all this project will be very interactive for the students.

Costs and Potential Challenges A reasonably priced recycling bin costs about $5 and we have to place 3 of these bins in every spot around the school. Lets say, one for glass, one for paper and one for plastic. If we were to place 5 of these triplets on each floor the total amount spent only on recycle bins alone would be $300. Other expenses in this project would be on stationary materials such as super glue, chart paper, etc. This would probably come to about $50. So the max spending on this project would be about $350 to $400. Some potential challenges will be getting the cooperation of both the students and the teachers. Even though educating the students on the importance of recycling and it’s various beneficial environmental impacts might get them to start recycling, a minor fine of say a dollar for incorrect recycling will ensure a higher success rate for this project. The custodians and janitors in the school must be told of this new shift in recycling and it is truly with their help that this project is going to be effective.
