3 T HE P AST S IMPLE – C ONTEXT Fill in the blanks: A boy __________ (want) a drink. He __________ (walk) over to a soft drink machine. He __________ (put) some coins in the machine. He __________ (press) the Coca Cola button. He __________ (put) the can on the ground. He __________ (get) another can of Coke. He __________ (put) the second can onto the ground. 4 T HE P AST S IMPLE - U SE Notice that… each action was completely finished before the next began. we used the past simple for each sentence. We could have used words like then, and, so, etc. to make the story more cohesive and interesting. A boy wanted a drink so he walked to a soft drink machine. He put some coins in the machine and he pressed the Coke button. He put the can of Coke on the ground. After that, he bought another can coke and put it on the ground beside the other…

5 T HE P AST S IMPLE - U SE The past simple talks about a state or action that is finished. now If the actions happen one after the other, there is no need for any other tense. 1. He wanted a drink so 2. he put some coins in 3. and pressed the button, 4. but then he put the can on the ground.

6 T HE P AST S IMPLE – F ORM – P OSITIVE S TATEMENTS Change a regular verb into the past tense by adding –d or –ed. want walk press open Irregular verbs are very common. These must be memorised. They do not follow any rules. put get stand leave wanted walked pressed opened put got stood left

7 T HE P AST S IMPLE – F ORM – P OSITIVE S TATEMENTS When making a positive statement, use the past tense form. You DO NOT need any helping verbs. He wanted a drink. He put some coins in. He pressed the button. He put the can on the ground.

8 T HE P AST S IMPLE – F ORM – N EGATIVE S TATEMENTS When making a negative statement, use did and the verb – NOT the past tense form. In a negative statement or question, use not. subject didnot verb Hedidnotdrink… Hedidnotput…. He did not drink the Coke. He did not put the Pepsi on the ground.

9 T HE P AST S IMPLE – F ORM –Q UESTIONS When making a question, use did and the verb – NOT the past tense form. In a question, you have to change the word order. (question word) did subjectverb Did hepress…. Why did heput…. Did he press the Coke button? Did he put the Coke on the ground? Why did he put the Coke on the ground?

The man didn’t want straight hair.
