1 Session Three Eternity Past – Angels & Demons

2 Last week we had a glimpse into heaven – the eternal dwelling place of God
We discovered it’s not of this creation We discovered it is vast, bigger than our whole universe And today we will look at the creation and purpose of angels, as well as the fall of 1/3 (?) of the angels who became demons.

3 Angels are REAL Over 300 direct references to angels in the Bible
They are stronger than man, but not omnipotent (Psalm 103:20; 2 Peter 2:11). They are greater than man in knowledge, but not omniscient (2 Samuel 14:20; Matthew 24:36). They are more noble than man, but not omnipresent (Daniel 9:21-23, 10:10-14).

4 Angels were created Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts…Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created. (Psalm 148:2,5) For by [God's beloved Son] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16)

5 We do not know exactly when God created the angels, however we know it was before the creation of the world They watched God create everything and praised Him as He did it!!

6 Job 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth
Job 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, Job 38:5 Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? Job 38:6 "On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

7 Septuagint Job 38:7 When the stars were made, all My angels praised Me with a loud voice. The Septuagint is what Jesus and the writers of the New Testament quoted.

8 So… Angels were created at some point in eternity past and praised God when He created the heavens (1&2) and earth. Trinity & Angels World Satan’s Man Heaven Eden Fall

9 How many angels are there?
Rev 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, Rev 5:12 saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing."

10 Myriads Μυρίας murias Thayer Definition: 1) ten thousand
2) an innumerable multitude, an unlimited number 3) innumerable hosts

11 What do angels look like?
Women with wings? Google Babies with wings? Bing, Yahoo The Bible always refers to them as male. It appears there are no female angels! Thus, they do not marry or procreate. Mar 12:25 "For when they (Christians) rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

12 Most of them have a form like us…
Heb 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. Two weeks ago we talked about God the Father and the Son and their physical appearance…

13 They say since God(the Father) is Spirit He has no form…
Fearing God™ We established that those who teach the Father has no physicality based it on one verse: Joh 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." They say since God(the Father) is Spirit He has no form… When we are born again, we are spirit also!

14 Joh 3:6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 "Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.‘ 8 "The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

15 Fearing God™ So are angels! Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET"? Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? Yet they have bodies and appearance! As do we! In the image of God!

16 Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.“ 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 16

17 Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam
Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Gen 5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 17

18 Gen 5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; Same words!!!! 18

19 Image – “A masculine noun meaning an image, a likeness, a statue, a model, a drawing, a shadow” – physical likeness Likeness – “A feminine noun meaning resemblance; concrete model, shape” The Hebrew is very clear here – we are made in the physical likeness of The Father and the Son! 19

20 Angels are the likeness of God as well…
Dan 10:16 And behold, one in the likeness of the children of man touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth and spoke. I said to him who stood before me, "O my lord, by reason of the vision pains have come upon me, and I retain no strength. 20

21 So… We are created in the literal image and likeness of God
Angels are in the likeness of men (not made in the likeness of men – they look like men, and men look like God) Thus some Angels are also in the likeness of God as well! (some have wings, and other characteristics not in God’s likeness)

22 Have you ever seen or sensed and angel?
I have seen angels I picked one up who was hitch hiking once Cody has seen an angel Cheryl has seen angels I have had encounters with demons

23 Angels are wise: II Sam. 14:20, "
Angels are wise: II Sam. 14:20, "...and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God...."

24 Angel have access to the throne of God anytime…
Mat 18:10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.

25 By the way… When we pray, we have access to the very throne of God!
Zec 3:7 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'If you will walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also govern My house and also have charge of My courts, and I will grant you free access among these who are standing here.

26 Eph 2:18 for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
Eph 3:11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, Eph 3:12 in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.

27 Heb 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Heb 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

28 Seraphim My call into ministry Host of Heaven Cherubim Four living creatures 7 Spirits 24 Elders

29 How about Guardian Angels?

30 Psa 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them.

31 Mat 18:10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.

32 2Ki 6:16 So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 2Ki 6:17 Then Elisha prayed and said, "O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the LORD opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

33 Psa 68:17 The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.

34 Zep 3:17 "The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior
Zep 3:17 "The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy & singing. Ps. 91:1-11

35 When you die, your guardian angel escorts you to heaven:
Caring for believers at the moment of death - In the story of Lazarus and the rich man, we read that angels carried the spirit of Lazarus to “Abraham's bosom” when he died (Luke 16:22).

36 The Scriptures witness that angels have all three attributes of elements of personality.
Intelligence – As evidenced by their desire to learn of our great salvation in Christ (1Peter 1:12) and the ability to communicate intelligence in speech (Matthew 28:5). Angels have emotions - Scripture bears this out. Struck with God’s power and wisdom, they respond to His wondrous works in creation with joy (Job 38:7)

37 Angels are self determinate viable beings!

38 Angels have wills. - Angels have self-determination; that is, they can choose from various courses of action and seek to carry one through. God appeals to their wills by commanding them to worship Christ, His Son (Hebrews 1:6). But in the case of some, their wills opposed the will of God. We will see that when we look at Lucifer, also called Satan

39 Why were they created? The worship of God (Isa. 6:3; Rev. 4:8),
As messengers of God (Dan. 9:22; Luke 1:11, 26; 2:9; Rev. 1:1), As soldiers in spiritual combat (Dan. 10:13f; Rev. 12:7), Observers of God’s creation and men And now (after creation)As ministers to God’s people (Heb. 1:14)

40 Observers… Observed God’s creation and rejoiced (Ps. 38:7)
They rejoice when one sinner repents (Luke 15:10) Observe God’s manifold wisdom in the unfolding of His redemptive plan (1 Pet. 1:12; Eph. 3:10). verb, parakuptw, “to bend over,” conveys the idea of bending over to see something more clearly or to look intently (see also Jam. 1:24)

41 Also spectators of God’s redemptive work (Job 38:7; Luke 15:10; 1 Cor
Also spectators of God’s redemptive work (Job 38:7; Luke 15:10; 1 Cor. 4:9; 11:10; Eph. 3:10; Tim. 3:16; 1 Pet. 1:12)

42 Where do they live? They live in heaven with God
Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,

43 Mar 13:32 "But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

44 Types of Angels Archangels Cherubim Mighty Angels Seraphim
Watchers – the assembly 24 Elders Four living creatures 7 spirits before the throne

45 Archangel - a chief angel
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

46 Cherubim - guardians of Eden, Gen 3:
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life

47 2Th 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

48 Mighty Angels 2Ki 19:35 ¶ And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

49 Isa 6:1 ¶ In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

50 Seraphim …majestic beings with 6 wings, human hands or voices in attendance upon God Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

51 7 spirits before the throne are 7 angels
Witnesses to the title deed of earth… Rev 5:1 I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals.

52 Rev 1:4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

53 They are the angels that pour out the wrath of God
Rev 15:7 Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever

54 Rev 17:1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,

55 And they are the ones who sound the trumpets for judgment
Rev 8:6 And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

56 How are the referred to in scripture?
Angel (Heb: mal’ak; Gk:angelos mean “messenger”. Sons of God (Job 1:6; 38:7) as created beings Holy Ones (Ps 89:5, 7): created perfect and “set apart”

57 Hosts (expression “Lord of hosts” 60x in Isaiah alone); heavenly hosts (Luke 2:13). Heb: tsaba, “armies” Angel of the Lord: OT only; at times a Christophany, preincarnate Christ Also Principalities, Powers, Thrones, Dominions, Authorities Some are considered “good” because they obey their creator and some are “evil”, called demons, who have rebelled against all authority determined to be self-willed and destructive to anything attributed to God

58 Some are Governmental Rulers, “first in rank” (Eph 6:12)
Dan 10:13 ref to “prince of Persia” opposing Michael—not a king, but a fallen angel…a demon of high rank Some are of highest ranking Michael is called “archangel” (Jude 9) and “great prince” in Dan 12:1 Other “chief princes” (Dan 12:13) Prominent individuals known among angels (only 2 named) Michael, a high up angel Gabriel (Dan 9:21; Luke 1:26), messenger of kingdom program—explained 70 weeks to Daniel (8:15-16) Lucifer (Isa 14:12) “Shining one” Divine Attendants Cherubim: highest order with indescribable power—appearance as man, lion, ox and eagle – four wings Seraphim: “burning ones”– surround the throne proclaiming “holy, holy, holy”

59 . Rulers or principalities: indicate an order of angels both good and evil involved in governing the universe (Rom. 8:38; Eph. 1:21; 3:10; 6:12; Col. 1:16; 2:10, 15). 2. Authorities or powers: the superhuman authority of angels and demons exercised in relation to the affairs of the world (Eph. 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12; Col. 1:16; 2:10, 15; 1 Peter 3:22).

60 . Powers: indicates angels and demons have greater power than humans (2 Peter 2:11). See Ephesians 1:21 and 1 Peter 3:22. 4. Place of rule. In one place demons are designated as world rulers of this darkness (Eph. 6:12). 5. Thrones or dominions: the dignity and authority of angelic rulers in God’s use of them in His government (Eph. 1:21; Col. 1:16; 2 Peter 2:10; Jude 8)

61 Watchers (Dan 4:13, 17, 23)Collectively called “the council” (Ps 89:7), “the assembly” (Ps 89:5), 24 elders (Rev.4:4) Dan 4:13 'I was looking in the visions in my mind as I lay on my bed, and behold, an angelic watcher, a holy one, descended from heaven.

62 A governing council or assembly of 24 Elders
Dan 4:17 "This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers And the decision is a command of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, And bestows it on whom He wishes And sets over it the lowliest of men."

63 24 watcher elder angels around the throne…
Psa 89:7 A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him? Psa 89:8 O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.

64 Psa 89:5 The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

65 Dan 7:9 "I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; …The court sat, And the books were opened. Rev 4:4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads.

66 They sang a song with the other angels and living creatures…
Rev. 5:6-10 Rev 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, Rev 5:12 saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing."

67 The 24 Elders ordained the law!
(Gal. 3:19). Gal 3:19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

68 Is this important to us? YES!
1Co 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

69 1Co 4:9 For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.  1Ti 5:21 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.

70 It may be that angels are involved in our lives much more than we
It may be that angels are involved in our lives much more than we realize. “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8).

71 We must not worship angels nor seek them out…
Paul warns, “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels...” (Col. 2:18). Rev 19:10 Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he *said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
