2. An important scene is when Ellie and her friends return to Hell. It is the only place that they have any semblance of safety from the foreign invaders.

3. Homer asks his friends to decide on what they are going to do about the invasion of Wirrawee. “The way I see it these are our choices. 1. We sit here and do nothing 2. We try and be heroes. 3. We go out there at night guerrilla style”

4. “What about the bible? Thou shall not kill…I won’t murder anyone” “I think we have to fight back…we’ll never sleep again if we don’t” “There’s nothing chicken about staying alive mate” “I’m soo scared and I think that I might just stand there and scream” “I’m not just going to sit here and do nothing” “We have to trust our instincts…It’s time to go to war”

6. “I have blood on my hands” “I can’t tell if what I did was right or wrong…how many people is it ok to kill to keep me alive? At what point to we lose our soul…if we haven’t already” Ellie is concerned with whether or not her actions of killing the young female enemy soldier has destroyed her soul. She is also worried about the impact deciding to fight and potentially kill will have on her friends. She doesn’t want them to lose their innocence and experience the guilt that she has had to deal with.

7. Survival Right and wrong An important idea in this scene is the concept of survival. Stuart Beattie raises the question of how far someone will go to protect and defend themselves. He also asks his audience to consider at what point does self defence become murder. In what situation is killing ok? The concept of sin and right and wrong is also explored. In the bible killing is a sin. However if you kill to survive do you put your soul in jeopardy? What is interesting is how the characters in the film change their ideas of right and wrong because of the situation they have been placed in. This reflects how strong the human survival instinct is. On the whole most people will do anything they can to protect themselves and their family, even if this means compromising their previous moral values or beliefs.
