5 To respond to the Communist threats of the Cold War, President Eisenhower added the words “under God” to the pledge "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." 8 Did you know? When saying the words “to the flag”, students used to raise and point their hand, gesturing to the flag hung in their classroom. During WWII, this practice was ended, as it too strongly resembled the Nazi salute.
