3 Format—Writing Sentences  You will write sentences using 6 words from the list I choose 5 (you won’t know ahead of time); you choose 1 Sentences show your understanding of the word and ability to use it well Sentences may change the tense or form of a word, but must use the new form of the word correctly  Example: Change opulent (adj.) to opulence (noun)

4 Writing Effective Sentences  Sentences must give enough context to show your understanding of the word.  If word could be replaced by several others, you have not given enough context.  Example: Opulent (adj. 1) characterized by or exhibiting extreme affluence; 2) wealthy, rich, or affluent; 3) richly supplied, abundant) No: The house was opulent. Yes: The opulent house was decorated with velvet curtains, gold statues, and crystal chandeliers.

5 How To Study  Review definitions and parts of speech with parents and friends  Make flashcards  Practice writing sentences for each word

6 Cumulative Vocabulary Study  Each semester, you will have a test that draws from your vocabulary for the whole semester. Keep your flashcards and continue to review words throughout the year.  Other Vocab Bonuses Each quiz will have an extra-credit sentence that asks you to use a word I choose from a previous quiz. Using vocabulary words correctly in your essay and homework writing can earn you extra points on assignments. Underline vocab words when you use them in your writing.
