 Street installations are a form of street art. While conventional street art is done on walls and surfaces street installations use three dimensional objects set in an urban environment. Like graffiti, the installation is effectively abandoned by the artist upon completion. Street Installations sometimes have an interactive component.

 Mark Jenkins is an American artist most widely known for the street installations he creates using clear packing tape. Jenkins' practice of street art is to use the "street as a stage" where his sculptures interact with the surrounding environment including passersby who unknowingly become actors. His installations often draw the attention of the police.

 Jenkins first began experimenting with tape as a casting medium for creating sculpture in 2003 while living in Rio de Janeiro. Wrapping the tape in reverse and then resealing it, he was able to make casts of objects including himself. His first figurative street project was a series of clear tape self casts that he installed on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Jenkins became immediately interested in the reactions of the people and considered his installation as much a social experiment as an art project.

 Viewer discretion: the baby is a doll and NOT a real baby.  Step one: wrapping the object  With either plastic wrap, or the non- sticky side of packing tape, wrap your first layer of plastic.

 Tape the wrapped object in 2 – 3 layers of tape

 Take a pair of scissors and make an incision into the cast layer and cut a seam  Release the object and remove any excess cling wrap from inside:

 Match up the seams and tape together

 For your assignment you will get into group of threes. I want your group to come up with an idea together for a figure tape sculpture. This sculpture should be interacting somehow with the school environment. When the sculpture is completed you may set up the sculpture in the classroom, in the foyer, or anywhere else, but it must be approved by me. Once it is set up, I want each person in your group to take a picture of it and print it off and include it in your sketchbooks. Some things to think about before creating the sculpture:  What is the sculpture saying?  How is it interacting with its environment?  How are other people going to react when they see it in its environment?
