6 What is the place of and value of sexuality in literature for teens?

7 “The YA reader knows when he or she is ready for sexual content the same way that adults know, whether they are reading novels for entertainment or educational purposes. In essence, adults need to treat YA readers like young adults, respecting their ability to navigate the differences between reality and fiction when it comes to sexuality. Furthermore, they need to understand that YA readers a reading a specific novel because they choose to do so: sometimes for a vicarious experience, sometimes for entertainment, sometimes for curiosity.

8 Young adult readers are using books like [these] to try on different attitudes about sexuality and sexual agency, from the naïve to the experienced, and even reflect on personal beliefs about sexuality, whether acted upon or not.

9 Advising Your Readers A shy student approaches the circulation desk with a copy of Will Grayson, Will Grayson in his hands. He quietly asks if you have other books like this one. You’re uncertain: does he want more books about gay characters? More realistic fiction with male main characters? More books will multiple narrators? Now what d you do?
