Outline Reminder on the Global Strategy How far are we in the implementation? 26 May 2014

Why? 1)To address developing countries’ lack of capacity to provide reliable statistical data on food and agriculture more reliable, timely data! 2)To provide a blueprint for long-term sustainable agricultural statistical systems in developing countries sustainability, ownership!

What? A comprehensive framework for improving the availability and use of agricultural and rural data 3 Pillars: Produce a minimum set of core data Better integrate agric. statistics into National Statistical Systems Improve governance and statistical capacity building 26 May 2014

Who? The Global Strategy is an international partnership The Global Strategy is implemented through a governance mechanism at different levels The programme is funded through a Global Trust Fund managed by FAO and sponsored currently by DFID, Gates Foundation and the Italian Cooperation 26 May 2014

Implementation at global level (1) Research component: progress made on several topics for developing cost-effective methods in partnership  Conceptual framework for Agricultural statistics, Integrated Survey Framework; Master sampling frames  Crops estimates, Post-harvest losses, Cost of production, Food Balance sheets  Small-scale fisheries  Integration of geographic information, Use of remote sensing, Use of new technologies 26 May 2014

Implementation at global level (2) Guidelines and training material to be released soon:  Guidelines:  Agricultural Sectoral Strategies  Nomadic livestock  Use of GPS  Classifications in agricultural statistics  Access to micro-data  Training material:  Linkage between population and agricultural censuses  Greenhouse Gas Emissions  Integrated survey frameworks 26 May 2014

Implementation at regional level Africa Asia and the Pacific Latin America and the Caribbean 26 May 2014

Africa Country assessments validated in 52 countries In-depth country assessments almost finalized in 6 countries Another set of countries in 2014 SPARS to be started in priority countries Training: syllabus, curricula reviewed, support to statistical schools, scolarships process started

26 May 2014 Asia and the Pacific 1 st stage country assessments validated in 52 countries In-depth country assessments started in 4 countries, 4 other to follow in 2014 SPARS to be started in priority countries Training: 4 workshops at regional level already organized
