2. Phonics and Early Reading Follow the Bug Club Scheme in Foundation – continuing through to KS1. Learn and introduce new sounds in-line with the scheme to practise at home. Practise naming the individual sounds and knowing the sounds they make. Apply the sounds knowledge to reading and making words.

3. Bug Club Introduces new sounds starting with s, a, t and p. Learn the names and the sounds the letters make. Practise blending these letters to make words. Practise using these letters to make words. Practise letter formation (small and capital).

4. Bug Club As the scheme continues more sounds are introduced. There is time to revise the skills using previously learnt sounds. We continue to practise recognising, reading, word building and letter formation with new sounds.

6. Naming the letters The alphabet song is sang at the start and end of each session. This helps children to learn the names of the letters. This also helps children to find the letters with ease for word building.

9. Learning the sounds All children are assessed on phonics and reading at the start of term. Sets of sounds are sent home for practise at home. Progress will be regularly assessed and the sounds cards will be updated.

13. Strategies for learning initial sounds… - Visual recognition Practise through reading word cards Pointing out sounds in day to day life, e.g. signs, books, magazines, game instructions. Games such as snap and pairs.

15. Once your child is secure with most sounds we will introduce word cards and reading books.

16. Colour-coded word cards Word cards will be sent home to practise in sets. Many of the words will be phonetic. These words will introduced in-line with the sounds covered in the Phonic Bug Scheme. We will also send home tricky (sight) words.

18. Tricky words (non phonic) Some words are impossible for children to sound out. These are learnt through visual recognition. Strategies such as playing snap, pairs, reading signs and words in day to day life will help.

19. Reading books Initially picture books will be sent home for using picture clues to tell stories. Books with words will be sent home. Books will be changed at least twice a week in-line with KS1.

20. Reading books We will assess your child’s reading on a regular basis. Each stage on the reading scheme as a set of National Curriculum levelled books for levelling. Children can be moved up a level where necessary. No need to read every book!

21. Reading books We encourage children to read a range of different library books at home for variation including poems, non-fiction and comics. It is also beneficial to read a range of books to your children to immerse them in different language and vocabulary. This all helps for imaginative play creative and varied writing later in the school.

22. Other forms of reading / phonics in school Children will read their reading book regularly to an adult. Children will partake in word building work to follow up phonics sessions either writing or using magnetic letters. We will introduce guided reading using phonics books. Books and comics will be available for independent reading. A range of interactive phonics based games will be used.

23. All children will learn at different rates and we will meet them at their point of need.
