DESKTOP PUBLISHING What is it? How did it start? How does it work? Who’s doing it?

What is Desktop Publishing? w Desktop Publishing (DTP) refers to the process of using the computer to produce documents such as newsletters, brochures, books, etc.

History of DTP w In the Beginning…Text was inputted into typesetters to create galleys (long, vertical strips of typeset sentences). The galleys were cut and pasted onto layout boards, which contained any graphics or photos to be included. The completed boards, now called “camera-ready art” would go through several more steps to produce the final printed product.

History of DTP (continued) w In the mid-1980s…Paul Brainerd developed PageMaker, a software that allowed us to combine text and graphics on pages using low-cost computers and laser printers.

History of DTP (continued) w Today...DTP is a multi-million dollar industry--much of it being conducted out of home offices.

How does DTP work? w Basic Components--Desktop computer system, printer, word processing software, and publishing software. Although not vital some systems include drawing and photo manipulation software, electronic pens and graphic tablets.

How does DTP work? (con’t) w The publishing software then combines text and graphics into an on-screen display allowing you to see a draft of the finished product. The program allows you to refine both text and graphics, including changing size and style of text or manipulating graphics.

How does DTP work? (con’t) w Finally, the finished product is either printed on a laser printer or saved on a disk to be printed by a service bureau or print shop.

Who’s doing DTP? A desktop publisher “designs documents” using desktop publishing techniques. w A Graphic-Designer - has some formal training and uses high-end software to design documents for clients. w Home-Based Business Person - often self- trained to design documents for clients using DTP software.

Who’s doing DTP? (con’t) w Home-Based Business Person-with a word- processing, resume, or office support business who used WP software. w Self-Employed Person-that designs documents for their own business (not for clients). Uses low-end to mid-range DTP software and prints documents off their desktop printers.

Who’s doing DTP? (con’t) w A Secretary that designs documents for an employer in addition to their non-design duties.
