2  Graves disease is an immune system disorder resulting in over production of thyroid hormones  Thyroid hormones affect many body systems the signs & symptoms associated with graves disease could be wide ranging & significantly influence your overall health

3  Happens more among women under 40  Anxiety/irritability  Fine tremor of hands/ fingers  Heat sensitivity  Weight loss  Goiters  Change in menstrual cycles  Erectile Dysfunction  Frequent bowel movements  Bulging eyes  Thick red skin on top of feet/shins  Unusual heartbeat

4  About 30% of people affected by Graves disease can develop Graves’ Ophthalmopathy.  Can effect tissues & muscle around the eyes.  Symptoms  Bulging eyes  Gritty sensation in eyes  Pressure/pain in eyes  Puffy/retracted eyelids  Reddened/inflamed eyes  Light sensitivity  Vision doubled/loss

5  Caused by malfunction in disease fighting immune system.  Risk factors (anyone can develop the disease)  Family history  Gender (women more likely)  Age (under 40)  Emotional/ physical stress  Pregnancy  Smoking  Other immune system disorders (i.e. type 1 diabetes)

6  Treatment  Radioactive Iodine Therapy  Take radioiodine by mouth since iodine is needed to produce hormones the radioiodine goes through the thyroid cells and destroys overactive thyroid cells  Anti-Thyroid Medications  Used to interfere with use of iodine by thyroids to produce hormones  Beta Blockers  These medications don’t inhibit production of thyroid hormones, but do block the effect of hormones on body  Over counter creams/ointments  Relieve swelling and redness  If untreated  Brittle bones  Heart disorders  Pregnancy issues  Thyroid storm

7  Apply cool compresses to eyes  Added moisture may soothe eyes  Wear sunglasses  When eyes protrude more sensitive to bright light  Use lubricating eye drops  May help relieve dry scratchy feelings on surface on eyes  Elevate head of bed  Keep head higher than rest of body to reduce fluid accumulation in head and relieve pressure on eyes  Don’t smoke
