1 Digipak Analysis

2 The layout of this particular digipak reflects the notion that all four of the members gave an equal part of themselves to produce this album in that the CD is centred and is also illustrated with a rainbow effect. This rainbow effect can be broken down into its fundamental colours in each of the four panels with the pictures of band members on. The images used are of the band members looking in different directions away from the camera. This is common when shooting band photos but they have tweaked it in such a way to create something unique. The high contrast finish also bares connotations of grittiness which reflects the bands style and genre. Choosing the CD décor based on a zebra pattern appears to be without motive. It’s primary contribution to the product is one of aesthetics. The way in which the Digipak unfolds is also unique. By opening out in four directions, and in juxtaposition with the different directions the band members are looking a symmetry is created.

3 One panel has a picture of the artists. By having more than one panel they are able to have the artistic album cover and a headshot of the artists. This is what creates a higher sense of connection between producer and consumer through the product. Another way in which a connection is reinforced is the inclusion of a booklet on the inside sleeve, this will often have song lyrics, dedications and sometimes stories from the recording sessions, or meaning behind a song. This is seen as well in “special features” portions of special edition DVDs. Colour scheme is important. The use of an earthy pallet puts forward a surface impression which aids in it’s distinct appearance on the shelf. The use of the font on the CD itself is also something which reflects the bands style. The sketchy writing and drawing of an elephant pushes a less produced feel, which could further associate with the audience.

4 On this side is a paragraph highlighting Beyoncé's achievements. This passage has two functions in that it either proves Beyonce as an artist, further explaining why you should buy the album and also provides a written element to the product. In most cases this panel of text would simply be a photo. This digipak has managed to insert both text and a photo. The vinyl style CD decal is common in greatest hits CDs. Aesthetically this creates a vintage sense, which enhances the perceived value of the object. Underneath the CD is a picture of Beyoncé, this is something which appeals to the male gaze, which will help sales.
