2 Discovering Nouns: Learning & understanding the difference in common, proper, concrete, & abstract nouns!

3 A noun is the part of speech used to describe a person, place, thing, quality, or action. The types of nouns we are going to look at are: common vs. proper and concrete vs. abstract

4 Common vs. Proper Nouns Common Nouns coffee shop jeans country teacher school Proper Nouns Starbucks Levi’s America Mrs. Johnson E.T. Booth Middle School Common noun = names a general item; does not require capitalization Proper noun = names specific item; requires capitalization *Exception* = remember common nouns can be capitalized at the beginning of a sentence!

5 Examples: 1. I have a friendly dog named Jake. Common noun = dog Proper noun = Jake Proper noun = Jake 2. We visited the country of Italy. Common noun = country Proper noun = Italy Proper noun = Italy * Identify the ONE common noun that DESCRIBES the proper noun!!

6 Concrete or Abstract?? A concrete noun is a noun that describes a material or tangible object. This is something you can physically touch. An abstract noun is a noun that describes an intangible concept such as love or envy. These are nouns that you can not physically touch.

8 Examples *Find the concrete and abstract nouns! Concrete… 1. When they take the dog to the beach, it spends hours chasing waves. = When they take the dog to the beach, it spends hours chasing waves. Abstract… 1. She looked back at her childhood with humor. = She looked back at her childhood with humor.
