Tuesday, May 7 Lesson Plans Wiki Pedometers Cardiovascular Equipment Virtual Reality Review Jawbone Begin Pedometer Log Begin Jawbone Log Sepak Takraw due Wednesday

Pedometers http://www.pesoftware.com/podcast/index.html

Wearing a Pedometer Waistband Directly above the midline of the thigh Reset to zero without removing it from waistband Counts by tallying vertical step motion

Possible Features Stopwatch function Distance covered (stride length) Calories expended (height & weight) Differentiate between walking / running –Avoid shaking the pedometer Interface with computer A simple counter is most accurate and useful

Accuracy Test Wear the pedometer Walk 100 steps –Some recommendations for a 20-step test Should record between 97-103 steps If not, –Re-adjust pedometer –Replace the battery –Buy a new one!

Locating Pedometers Locate and identify 3 different types of pedometers

Limitation of Pedometers Less accurate when –you move slowly –you have uneven gait –you are obese –you wear loose fitting clothing

Pedometers in Research Research Articles Physical Activity Program –How can I use similar information in a future teaching setting?

Advantages and Disadvantages of Pedometers Advantages –Inexpensive –Non-invasive –Use in a variety of settings –Easy to use for large groups –Use for behavior change –Objective measure of common activity Disadvantages –Loss of accuracy when jogging/running –Participant tampering –Walking only –No storage capacity –Not water-proof –Does not capture frequency, intensity, time of activity (FIT principle)

Why Promote Pedometers? Increase physical activity Motivation for physical activity Track student progress Extrinsic rewards Disadvantages of Pedometers –MVPA –Other activities

Accelerometers Activity monitors that detect intensity of movement Output is in activity counts (AC) Counts can be entered in prediction equations to determine activity energy expenditure (AEE) Can be attached to wrist, hip, or ankle Data is loaded onto computer for analysis AC cutpoints generated to calculate time in physical activity (PA) Frequently used in research settings

Advantages and Disadvantages of Accelerometers Advantages –Lightweight, non-invasive –Useful in lab and field settings –Indicator of intensity, frequency, and time –Extended periods of analysis –Some models are water- proof –Minute by minute analysis –AEE (energy expenditure) can be assessed Disadvantages –Expensive for large number of participants –Upper body movement not measured when worn at hip –Lack of field-based AEE equations in specific populations –AC cutpoints variable –Cannot guarantee proper placement

Pedometers: Recommended Requirement Goal for many adults: 10,000 steps/day Girls: 11,000; Boys: 13,000 Meets the recommended daily requirement for physical activity For individual assessment purposes, approximately 600 steps = 1/4 mile, 1200 steps = 1/2 mile, 1800 steps = 3/4, or 2400 steps = one mile.

Goal Setting Problems with a single standard Baseline and goal setting technique –Identify average daily activity (baseline) Record # of steps for 4 consecutive days Find the average Set a personal goal (add 10% more steps) Healthy Activity Zone –FITNESSGRAM –Establish a range of scores for students

Pedometers in School Settings Acquiring pedometers Introducing pedometers to students Establishing handling procedures Suggested pedometer activities: –Estimation –Moving across the state –Active vs. Inactive –Safe walk to school –School steps contest Suggested pedometer activities

Promoting Walking: Lifetime Activity Benefits of Walking –Weight management –Blood pressure management –Boosting high- density lipoproteins –Reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes –Decreasing the risk of heart disease Differences Among Students Recommendations for Walking –Brisk pace, comfortable stride, good arm swing –Talk test –Make it enjoyable

Walking Activities School-wide walking program Develop a walking activity with the following names: –I spy –Know your community –Learn about your friend –Interval walk –Cross-country walking –Walking golf –Treasure hunt –Scavenger hunt

Walking Programs Log it Walk Across America http://www.peclogit.org/logit.asp

Discussion How can pedometers be used in health and physical education? Sample student worksheet –Aerobic RoutineAerobic Routine

Date# of steps Did you wear the pedometer all day? Brief description of activity Total # of steps Name: Brent Heidorn Pedometer Log

Class Activity Scavenger Hunt –Scavenger HuntScavenger Hunt Lesson Ideas –Student 1Student 1 –Teacher 1Teacher 1 Obstacle Course Steps estimation game –Let’s walk… –Create a steps estimation game Skill development lessons in physical education with pedometers? –Discussion
