Loss of efficiency during the Refinement Process of fuel Loss of efficiency due to engine Performance limits Loss of efficiency due to car accessories

What is “Fuel Efficiency”?  Fuel Efficiency means “mileage”, i.e. the number of miles a car can cover with a litre of gasoline.  “Improved mileage” means using gas more efficiently in a car

Fuel Efficiency  It is the capability to transform energy into motion, i.e. moving a car or a truck from location A to B with minimum waste of energy. Fuel Efficiency also includes:  Efficiency in transforming raw sources of energy in fuel that can be used by an engine  Efficiency of the engine using the fuel  Efficiency of the person using the engine for the right purpose, without unnecessary waste

Engine efficiency Today’s engines are not very efficient. They have several limits that diminish efficiency - Power Dispersion - Friction - Inertia

How do accessories impact the engine’s efficiency?  Cars have lot of accessories such as seat warmers, navigation system, AC  These accessories run using the engine’s power.  The engine creates power for these accessories with a generator.  The engine provides power to the generator, to run the accessories which burns gasoline.  Bottom line: the more accessories you use, the more gasoline you burn.

In the end only 20% of the petrol is used to move the car

Car Emissions Pollutants that a combustion engine emits:  CO 2 (Carbon dioxide)  CO (Carbon monoxide)  PM2.5 (particulate matter)  SO2 (sulphur dioxide)  Coolants

Recycling cars In the U.S., cars are the most recycled product. Believe it or not cars in junkyards are recycled: the engine might not work but the air conditioning does so they recycle it.
