2 Intellectual Property Dept. Overview Manage all licenses pertaining to two primary groups: Standards/Publications: over 600 published documents Statistics: 9 data products Protect API’s Intellectual Property API complies with U.S. Title 17 The IP Department registers API publications with the U.S. Copyright Office to protect against copyright infringement Authorized redistributors: API has contracted redistributors to establish authorized vendors through which customers can purchase API documents. Permissions: The IP Department approves requests for API material to be reproduced in non-API publications, software, training, etc.

3 Intellectual Property: Copyright Why respecting API copyright is important: Safety violations API authorized redistributors ensure customers receive most current API standards API’s Global Industry Services Group is self-supporting Revenue generated from sales directly funds the standards development process API does pursue legal action against copyright infringement sites In 2013 API shutdown over 50 illegal websites

4 Reducing international regulatory barriers Standards Development Goal Create body of industry-specific knowledge for the use of those in the oil and gas industry – both domestically and internationally How does API accomplish this? API seeks to work with National Standards Bodies (NSBs) and National Oil Companies to have relevant standards adopted Standards adoption is critical to API’s international standards development strategy API works to have our standards translated

5 National/International Adoptions Challenges: Standards are often viewed as being cost prohibitive Some feel that access is limited unless they pay for high-priced subscriptions Solution: Public may review API standards online: API Government-cited & Safety website

6 National/International Adoptions International Adoptions Important to API 1. Access to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) 2. Standards exposure leads to increased participation in the standards process 3. International business growing 4. API members working overseas

7 National/International Adoptions Work with worldwide experts towards to adoption of API standards for use in the oil and gas industry Work with various countries to establish a Memorandum of Understanding utilizing API standards to support oil and gas operations in a particular region Allows the requestor to obtain API documents from an authorized API redistributor Does not permit reproduction, redistribution, or further duplication of the API material

8 National/International Adoptions Examples of US Regulatory Bodies API has recently worked with to incorporate documents into law: 1. NYDEC (New York Department of Environmental Conservation) 2. FERC (Federal Energy Regulation Commission) 3. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

9 National/International Adoptions Examples of international groups API has worked with in the areas of adoption: 1. Turkmen State Registrar for Turkmenistan 2. Kazakh Institute of Standardization 3. BSN (National Standardization Agency of Indonesia) 4. KPO (Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V.) 5. NCOC (North Caspian Operating Company) 6. OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate) 7. CNH (Comision Nacional de Hydrocarburos)

10 API moving forward with Russia Work closely with Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), to increase the support of API standards in Russia Work with Russian experts towards the adoption of API standards for use in the Russian oil & gas industry Protection of life (or) health Ensuring energy efficiency Increase number of translated API standards in Russia Maintain open lines of communication between Russia and API to facilitate effective interaction and responsiveness
