An eating disorder where people starve themselves to lose weight. The word “anorexia” came from the greek origin meaning “descending appetite”. It was established in 1873.

It is a life style disease because it involves a person or a group of people who have an unhealthy relationship with food. It is usually caused by people who think they are fat so they refuse to eat.

Lack of eating Dangerously thin Always worried about their weight. Excessive hair growth Nails and hair become brittle. They have a distorted body image. Their skin becomes dry and yellow. Always cold May cut food into tiny pieces. Low blood pressure. Can not think right. Sad/moody Heart failure/slow heart rate.

Anemia Weak muscles Swollen joints. Fragile bones Osteoporosis Kidney stones/failure. Low potassium, magnesium and sodium. Constipation and bloating. Menstrual cycle stops. Bone loss Problems growing Problems getting pregnant. Bruise easily.

This is a girl whose body image is distorted because she thinks she is fat. The girl below refuses to eat anything so she will lose weight.

If you suspect anyone of being anorexic you should help them immediately before they get worse. You can talk to them to help get their life back on track or talk to a trusted adult to help talk to them and send them to therapy. The first step to curing anorexia is admitting you have a problem. You should also stay away from activities or people who trigger your obsession. If you help them before they are really bad they can get back on track faster. If you wait too long to help them it will be harder to cure and they are more endangered.

The cultural pressure to be thin Family pressures to have a controlling diet. Can run genetically. Being involved in activities such as ballet, modeling, and gymnastics that pressure you to be slender. Stressful events such as moving or break-ups. Being a perfectionist.

Talk to your doctor/therapist to help regulate a healthy diet for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Therapist will help you: Gain a better body image Maintain a healthy weight. Eat more food. If necessary go to the hospital to help get nutrients and get you healthy again. You should see a nutritionist, therapist, and doctor.

Anorexia can effect your family members and friends because your confidence is distorted and your depressed and moody so your relationships with people will be distant. Also your family and friends care about you and don’t want you to feel “imperfect” and they want you to be health.

For every 1 guy that has anorexia, there are 10 girls who have anorexia. Caucasian females are more common to have anorexia then any other race. 0.5%-3.7% of women will suffer from this disease at some point in their life. 95% of the people who suffer from anorexia are females. More common in middle or upper social classes. When you don’t eat your stomach literately eats itself with your stomach acid. Celebrities are more common to obtain anorexia due to public pressure to also be thin and perfect
