3 Common and Proper Nouns
A COMMON NOUN names a general person, place, thing, or idea. Common nouns begin with a lowercase letter, unless found at the beginning of a sentence or part of a title. A PROPER NOUN names a specific person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns begin with a capital letter.

Ending Rule Add –s Most words will only require adding an s to the end (add –s to words that end in a vowel-y, such as monkeys) Add -es Add –es to words than end in –s, -x, -ch, -z (double z), and –sh. 34 Proper Adjectives One type of descriptive adjective is called the proper adjective. Proper adjectives are derived from, or come from, proper nouns. This means that they must always be capitalized. Proper adjectives sometimes are formed by adding a suffix to the proper noun.
