6 SLAVERY IN TRADE & EMPIRE Slavery has gone on for over 1000 years. British used silver to buy products. Slavery started in India. If it wasn’t for the trade and empire we wouldn’t have tea or coffee. If a slave would not do as he/her was told, they were whipped. Weapons were used if the slaves didn’t work. If it wasn’t for the trade and empire we wouldn’t have food but the way they treated the slaves was wrong.
