2 Today’s session will cover  Basic information about using the Resource Room and Computing Suite  The library website  Accessing resources off-campus  Finding references on reading lists via WebCat (and journals from TDNet)  Exercises

4 Fire alarms Please follow the instructions mentioned during the “Fire and Safety Briefing”

5 Workspaces Computing Computing Suite (Room 2011)

6 Workspaces Resource Room (Room 2017)  Studying – using the many study tables  Group Study Rooms – for discussions

7 Using your mobile phone  Please keep your phone conversation out of the Resource Room and Computing Suite  Phone should be kept in silent mode  Feel free to use your phone along the corridor area

8 Food and drinks  No food allowed in both the Computing Suite and Resource Room  Bottled water only

9 Printing and copying  Room 2011 - Self- service copying and printing.  Free printing for academic-related stuff  Please refrain from abusing the system

10 Internet in the Resource Room  Laptop and wireless access  To log in: 1.Select ‘USMC’ for Wireless Network Connection 2.Use your Student ID and password

12 Log in with your User Name and Password, like how you log on your computer terminal To access the SUSSED Portal: https://sussed.soton.ac.uk

13 Do check out some of the functions when you have the time Default Student page inside the SUSSED Portal Click on the ‘Library’ tab to access the library homepage

15 The Resources section has details of all our collections both electronic and print. Note that you can always use “Quick Links” to quickly access the frequently used services Click on the ‘Services’ tab to see the available library services

16 The Library Services section includes information about Loans, the Reserve Collection, Inter-Library Loans etc. Click on the ‘About Us’ tab to read up on the other libraries

17 The About Us section has lots of information about the library. Click on the ‘Subject Support’ to access the list of all course disciplines

18 The Subjects section has a webpage for each discipline – your Subject Page. Simply find yours in the list. Find: Engineering and the Environment

25 Access to books  There is a collection in the ‘Resource Room’ in the Malaysia campus.  Many books are available online  Let us know if you have problems 25

26 Access to journals  Most journals are available online  Some older years are only in print in Southampton (Most first and second year students do not require them)  Let us know if you need journal articles only available in print 26

28 Access - on campus  Generally no passwords are needed – A few need your Institutional (email) username & password – A handful have special usernames/passwords  If you have problems – For journals check our access on TDNet – For other resources use links on the library website

29 Access – off campus  For many resources Institutional Login is an option  VPN will give you the same access as on campus  Some TDNet functions do not work off campus without VPN

30 Look for ‘Institutional Login’, ‘UK Federation’ or ‘Shibboleth’ links

31 You often need to select the UK (or UK Federation) Then find ‘University of Southampton’ (If you can’t find us look for Southampton University)

32 VPN  Virtual Private Network  Link to University network  When connected your computer appears to be ‘on campus’  Managed by iSolutions. Instructions on iSolutions web pages at: www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/computing/net/vpn/

35 Example: Key parts of a reference - books  James, Glyn (2010). Modern Engineering Mathematics 4th ed. Harlow : Prentice Hall. This book is your actual Mathematics’ textbook

36 Tick this book to only find eBooks

37 Find the right book

38 Click on “MyLibrary” to access the electronic book

39 Log in as an Institute (Shibboleth) - Select “University of Southampton”
