1 Page1 Canal Boat Captain The year is 1848 and you are a canal boat captain. It is your job to transport a boat full of goods from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Evansville, Indiana. It is up to you to make sure your load makes it safely to the destination. You will have to learn important terms used on the canal, hire a crew, choose the correct load for your boat, and navigate locks. Today, we no longer use canals to ship goods, can you list at least three ways good are shipped now? Can you think of other ways goods were moved in 1848? Modern shipping methods: Train, Truck, Airplane, ship, etc. 1848 shipping methods: Horseback, wagon

2 Page Important Terms: The Boat 2 Stern – The rear of the ship Helmsman – The person responsible for steering the boat Rudder – A large piece of wood that allows the boat to turn left or right Bow – The front of the boat Tiller – Piece of wood connected to the rudder the helmsman uses to steer Hull– The body of the boat usually measured in length and width (eg. 60x14) Bow Helmsman Tiller Stern Rudder Hull After reading the definitions, use the terms below to fill in the blanks.

3 Page Important Terms: The Canal 3 Canal – A body of water that looks like a river, but is man made and about 4 feet deep Mule – The animal that provides the power to pull the barge along the canal Towpath – A road along the side of the canal for the mule to walk on Driver – The person who walks with the mule to control the speed Helmsman – The person who steers the boat from the stern, usually the captain Towpath Mule Driver Helmsman Canal Match the terms Below to the blanks On the picture.

Your canal boat can carry 30 tons of cargo, you want to carry as much as possible without going over your limit! Each picture represents a weight in tons. Choose the items you want to take, but don’t go over 30 tons! Delete the items you don’t use. Below, make an inventory for you boat logbook. See the example in red.
