Common 8 th Grade Science Lab Equipment

9/4 p. 8 Lab Equipment IQ: Identify as many lab equipment pieces as you can on the yellow sheet. List them below:

Eye Goggles Impact goggles – used to protect eyes from flying objects Splash goggles – used to protect eyes from spilled liquids

Graduated Cylinder a measuring instrument for measuring fluid volume or vol. of irregular objects by water displacement; a glass container (cup or cylinder or flask) whose sides are marked with or divided into amounts.

How to use a graduated cylinder: Reading the measurements: Be sure to know what the measurement is between each tick line. Read from the BOTTOM of the curve of the meniscus.

Test Tube Usually used to mix, heat or separate, chemicals or mixtures in an experiment.

Beaker A wide cylindrical glass vessel with a pouring lip, used as a laboratory container and mixing jar.

Eye Dropper/Pipette pipette consisting of a small tube with a vacuum bulb at one end for drawing liquid in and releasing it a drop at a time. used to add SMALL amounts of liquid to a measurement

Test Tube Rack To hold test tubes upright to keep them from spilling. Test tube racks are used in chemistry laboratories to store test tubes, usually to dry.

Erlenmeyer Flask Created by Emil Erlenmyeyer in 1861. The conical shape allows the contents to be swirled or stirred during an experiment, either by hand or by a shaker or magnetic stirrer; the narrow neck keeps the contents from spilling. The smaller neck also slows evaporative loss better than a beaker.shakermagnetic stirrer The flat bottom of the conical flask makes it unlikely to tip over.

Electronic Balance/3 Beamer (Triple Beam Balance) A balance that generates a current proportional to the displacement of the pan The triple beam balance is used to measure masses very precisely; to find the mass of the object on the pan, simply add the numbers from the three beams.

Hot Mitten (Oven Mitt) A heatproof glove designed for use when carrying or handling hot or very cold objects.

Forceps (Tweezers) Small pincers, usually of metal, used for plucking or handling small objects.

Chemical Apron A garment, usually fastened in the back, worn over all or part of the front of the body to protect clothing.

Tongs Any of various devices for taking hold of objects. Tongs usually have 2 hinged legs with handles above & pointed hooks below. Can come in various shapes/sizes --Beaker Tongs (larger) --Test Tube Clamp (smaller)

OQ: Which 2 pieces of equipment do you need to find the density of a glass marble? a.Ruler and triple beam balance b.Graduated cylinder and tbb c.Ruler and test tube d.Graduated cyl. and beaker

9/6Lab Safety Rap IQ: Identify at least 5 mistakes in the pic:

OQ: Match equipment to purpose: 1.Beaker 2.Graduated cylinder 3.Test tube a.To hold hot or cold objects b.To hold, mix or heat chemicals c.To mix, react or heat small quantities of chemicals. d.To measure volume accurately.
