Definition: a comparison between two unlike things
(Might use “was”, “are”, and “is”)
Example: “Otto’s teeth are like daggers.”
Example: “When he stalks his prey, he is a shadow.”

Simile - “Otto’s teeth are like daggers.”
Metaphor – Otto’s teeth are daggers.

5. Why are similes and metaphors used?
They make writing more interesting.
They allow us to form pictures in our head.
The are used to help people understand concepts.

6. Why are similes and metaphors used?
“Most of us think of a metaphor as a device used in songs or poems only, and that it has nothing to do with our everyday life. In fact, all of us in our routine life speak, write and think in metaphors. We cannot avoid them. “

7. Simile EXAMPLES
“He was as busy as a bee.” comparing someone’s level of energy to a fast-flying bee
“She looks as snug as a bug in a rug." comparing someone who is very cozy to how comfortable a bug can be in a rug
"Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." comparing the uncertainty of life to the uncertainty of choosing a chocolate from a box
“I am as blind as a bat without my glasses." indicating that the person cannot see any better than a bat

8. Metaphor Examples
I have a broken heart. - Your heart is not literally broken into pieces; you just feel hurt and sad.
Leo is a rollercoaster of emotions around Stargirl. - A rollercoaster of emotions doesn't exist anywhere, so when people are on a rollercoaster of emotions, they are simply experiencing lots of ups and downs.
Time is money. – this means that time can be very valuable like money.
