5 Gazi County, Crete - Facts  Located near the city of Iraklion, Crete  A few kilometers from the Aegean Sea  Population of 20,000  Official language – Greek  Famous for it’s archaeological museums, reconstructed palaces, ruins, beaches and parks

9 Host Organization  Our partnership in Crete is with the municipal county government of Gazi, specifically through the mayors' office  Global Volunteers has been working at various locations in Greece since 1996

10 The Need  English is the International language of commerce. The less privileged children who don’t know English, don’t have the same advantages in life.  Any native English speaker can be an important resource. The emphasis is on improving speaking skills and not on formal rules of grammar.  Your knowledge of standard pronunciation, idioms, and syntax is the resource they seek.

11 Volunteer Work Projects Teach conversational English to young students: Teach conversational English to young students:  You and your teammates can share lessons with children aged 4-13 in classrooms and summer camps in Gazi County on the island of Crete.  The work sites -- in Gazi city as well as nearby villages -- are located outside Iraklion, all along the Aegean Sea.

19 Accommodations  Volunteers stay in the village of Amadoura - just 20 minutes outside of Iraklion.  Double-occupancy, air-conditioned rooms, private bath with hot water, twin beds, in- room safe and telephone.  This family-run hotel is located an easy walk from a beautiful local beach, and is close to many charming taverns, restaurants and tourist shops.  A bus stop is also nearby running every 20 minutes into Iraklion.  5-minute drive by taxi to Gazi, where you can find banks, a post-office, and also spend time visiting local taverns and shops.

23 Greek Cuisine  The diet in Greece consists of beef and pork (lamb is only served on special occasions and when in season). A variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, pita bread, and such traditional favorites such as feta cheese, and fresh black olives. A rich selection of fruits and homegrown vegetables accompanies the meals.  Most vegetarians can enjoy a broad assortment of fruits, vegetables, soups, salads, and cheese.

26 Transportation  You will be met and picked up at the Iraklion International Airport (airport code: HER ) in Crete by our Country Manager, Samantha Pinakoulaki  Schedule your flight to arrive before 8:15pm on Saturday (first day of program). Depart at any time after 7am on the last Saturday of the program.  15 minute drive from the airport to the Hotel Handakas  You will be taken to the work site (depending on distance)  Free-time is on the evenings and weekends (taxis are available)

30 Free-Time Activities  Archaeological Museum of Iraklion  Nature walks through parks and wild areas  Birthplace of painter El Greco, you can walk through his childhood home and see many of his famous works  Soaking up the Mediterranean sun at various beaches  Visit the markets and cafes of Iraklion  Visit the excavated and reconstructed palace of King Minos at Knossos
