1 UNSTICK THAT STUCK CLIENT Stages of Change & Motivational Interviewing

2 3 year (Feb. 2007 - Feb. 2010) Almost 3,000 participants – study and control group who were chronically unemployed Clients of First Nations, Métis, Inuit or non-status descent Single parents (mostly women), clients with multi-barriers to employment Persons with disabilities Ex-offenders Newcomers to Canada Youth (18-29 years of age) Employment Services Research Project (Manitoba)

3 We used the Stages of Change to assess client readiness to change & Motivational Interviewing to tip the scales of ambivalence The Models

5 Estimates less than 20% people making changes in their lives are in the action stage at any given time, but 90% of all programs designed to assist with change are intended for people in the action stage (Prochaska, et.al.,1994) Disconnect
