1 What is a myth? - is used to try to explain how the world works. -has gods, goddesses, or other superhuman beings. -Reveals the hopes and fears of mankind. -Are passed down orally by generations -Focuses on natural phenomena - People and animals often change into something else -have magic -Example: Narcissus

2 What are legends? - Legends are about REAL people and their accomplishments. -The people lived in more recent times and are real people mentioned in history. -Based on facts, but without proof. -The story of this real person may be exaggerated. - Do not have magic -They are passed down orally by generations. -Examples: King Arthur, Robin hood

4 What is a Fable? uses personification - animals, plants, forces of nature (ex: thunder), or objects with human-like characteristics. always has a moral, or lesson learned will often have a trickster who learns a lesson are passed down orally by generations Example: Tortoise and the hare

5 What is a Fairy Tale? - Good triumphs over evil, (happy endings) - Contains supernatural beings such as elves, dragons, fairies, trolls, etc. - has special beginning and ending phrases “once upon a time” and “happily ever after” - Royalty (kingdoms, princess...) - Takes place in forests, castles, cottages, or faraway lands - Set in the past (long, long ago) - May show the values of a culture -Magical elements -Passed down orally through the generations -Example: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty
